ROTTERDAM JUNCTION Challenger Baseball finally gets a home BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Richard Dickershaid watched two decades of work come to fruition when the Challengers took the field at Woestina Park this week. The longtime commissioner and one of the founders of the Challenger Tri-County Baseball League had been searching for a permanent home for his players ever since they split from the Rotterdam Little League during the late 1990s. He finally secured them one this winter, when the Little League agreed to share the little-used ballpark off Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction. “You’re looking at my dream,” he said, as young players slowly trickled onto the field during a mild Monday evening. With an agreement in place, Dickershaid and other volunteers with the Challengers went to work on the fields, which had fallen into disrepair after not being used for three years. Now, with roughly $50,000 invested into the field, Dickershaid and other league officials are confident his Challengers will have a home to call their own long into the future. Since March, worker and volunteers have been overhauling the three fields, renovating the concession stand and cleaning up the woodland areas surrounding the park. The Challengers invested almost $14,000 into materials for the field alone and even installed an in-ground sprinkler system to water the grass. “We put this park back on its feet,” Dickershaid said. The Challengers, a baseball league for developmentally disabled youths and adults, was started in 1987 as part of the Rotterdam Little League and had about two dozen players. Dickershaid, who was left handicapped after suffering tuberculosis of the spine, made the league a personal mission along with his wife, Margy. “I couldn’t have done it without her,” he confessed. After 11 years of affi liation together, the two leagues split. Some said having the Challengers play there was worse and more unjust than selling the Little League fields to Larned. What a perverse point of view that was in the rear view mirror. County ready to move forward with land purchase for ballpark
Rotterdam Little League players can rest assured they’ll have a field to hit home runs out of for years to come.
Schenectady County officials announced on Tuesday, Oct. 26, the county is ready to proceed with purchasing an 8.7-acre Burdeck Street parcel of land so the Rotterdam Little League can have a home for their games. The county is purchasing the land for $260,000, which utilizes funds set aside by county legislature for expanding and improving parks.
“We are pleased to announce that Schenectady County is ready to move forward with the purchase of the Burdeck Street site,” said Susan Savage, chair of the Schenectady County Legislature. “The Rotterdam Little League will now have a place they can call home.”
The little league is currently located on North Thompson Street, but the home wasn’t permanent. As developers moved forward with Timothy Larned and Maria Esposito’s plan for a 248-unit apartment complex and a 20,000-square-foot commercial strip, the little league was allowed to remain at the current location. The Challenger Leagues revitalization of the ballfields and facilities at Woestina is one of the success stories of the TeamRotterdam approach to solving problems in our town. It is this same approach that will build a new general-use town park, a community recreation and activity center, and make other improvements to our town's parks and recreation system.

Last fall when you went to the forum at the senior center you said it was "political" that the Challenger's finally had a field of their own at Woestina. As for my remarks at the Senior Center last year -- I was speaking about the article in the Daily Gazette right before the election -- trying to make a political issue out of the Challengers efforts to get use of the Woestina ball fields. The fact is that I had supported the Challengers being able to use the Woestina ballfields from the time their league president spoke with me about it in the summer of 2009. If you are the bald former county legislator -- you are just blowing more hot air out your back side.

I can only speak for myself -- I stood up for the Challengers from the moment that I met their league's president and learned that they were looking for a field.
I was a part of getting the 3 sides to come together and discuss/work out the issue.
and although you accuse me of doing things for political gain - you probably noticed that I did not go out on the field on opening day -- I was invited to by the league .. but I felt that it was THEIR DAY. I was happy to watch from the bleachers
TEAM-Rotterdam is a philosophy NOT a specific person or group of persons. The whole idea is that residents come together to make their town better ... and the "bright lights" can shine on the whole town rather than just a few glory seekers.
