First the place is filthy and i wouldn't go in there anyways.

I've been eating there since the mid-sixties and I have never noticed it being filthy.

No different from Newest Lunch.

If taxes were lower, owners could afford to remodel once in a while.

Last time we went, it was in the summer and there were flies everywhere and the counter was layered with grease! FILTHY.
As far as taxes....$7K/year is hardly a hardship.

Listen....I don't agree with the METROPLEX/GILLEN doling out our tax money to the friends and family club....but the reps would be doing the same thing. And I still don't hear any one campaigning on the platform of abolishing the METROPLEX/GILLEN!!

if I were the hot dog man....i'd let them foreclose and take the money and run!!! but that's his choice.

How do you know that any of these business folks LOST EVERYTHING? LOST ABILITY TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES? ARE PUT OUT ON THE STREET? You are kidding right?

did you ever hear of a business maintaining two sets of books? Ya know...the real ones and the ones they file taxes with? ALL business folks hide mega bucks all the time...untaxed mega bucks. And they do it year after year after decade after decade. These businesses can walk away with NO FINANCIAL PROBLEM......TRUST ME!!!!!!

Mikes hot dog owner don't care!! He was probably ready to throw in the towel anyway. The place is a sh!thole and has been declining for years. Taxes were less than $7K/year.....no big deal. He can walk away with the years of cash he stashed/invested, an extra $22K and no worries of unloading the dump. If he sold the dump...he would have a few months to reinvest in another piece of property or be taxed big time.

TRUST ME....IT'S A WIN WIN FOR THE HOT DOG MAN!

the city is doing him a BIG favor.

I'm not praising the business, just pointing out they paid taxes.

But what about the homeowners who bought houses and they lose because they have to pay Galesi's taxes and the rest of downtown?  Is it proper for homeowners to lose their homes and all they invested in them because they cannot afford to pay the extra taxes to cover downtown?

I'll bet Frank and Mary do not lose their house, the political cronies.

First....if they bought these homes in the city fairly recently....SHAME ON THEM!!!

Second....if they have lived in these home for years/decades....then they saw this coming A LONG TIME AGO....and did NOTHING!!!

I agree....why should the homeowners HAVE to pay for the friends and family club who don't pay taxes? THEY SHOULDN'T....DON'T PAY THEM!!!

Look....downtown is going to stay tax exempt even if the reps take control. TRUST ME!!!

Why? Cause if the reps start taxing them....THEY WILL MOVE OUT.....BUT.... they will be replaced with the friends and family club of the reps.

And what politician is going to campaign on abolishing the METROPLEX/GILLEN and force the friends and family club to pay taxes? NONE!!

nothin's gonna change.....so don't waste your time.....UNLESS.....the folks want to hold back on paying their taxes!!! If they are having such a hard time paying them....it should be no problem....right?

Mike's Hot Dogs pays off debt, will remain open
Posted: Oct 01, 2014 2:00 PM EST Updated: Oct 01, 2014 03:24 PM
By Joshua Rultenberg - email
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – - A local business will be open for the foreseeable future after back taxes almost shut it down.

Mike's Hot Dogs in Schenectady was on the verge of foreclosure for failing to pay property taxes. The owner of the business, John Mantas, says this has been a roller coaster of a couple of days after he thought he was going to lose the place he has run for 35 years.

Mantas was supposed to have paid three years of back taxes, totaling over $20,000, on Tuesday. However, he says he walked into city hall Wednesday morning and paid off his debt and then some.

“The liabilities that we had are taken care of and mike's is going to be around for a long time. I'm very happy to say that the community is amazing, the outreaching of support and family and friends, it's amazing,” he said.

Mantas, who has been owning and operating Mike's since he was 18 years old, says the reason for the confusion is because he was a bad bookkeeper.

"Sometimes we rob Peter to pay Paul. When you're a small businessman, you make ends meet the way you can and I missed the deadline," said Mantas.

“I'm glad that it came to as a resolution and we used a common sense approach. They're still in business and I think that's a win-win for the city,” said Councilman Vincent Riggi.

Mantas says he didn't realize he had a clerical error until 6 p.m. on Tuesday. He thought the deadline was October 31 and not the end of September. But the good news for him and the local community is that he was able to quickly put together the money.

So now he will keep his business, pay his own taxes AND the taxes of all his rich competitors downtown.

How about all the metroplex restaurants downtown pay their FULL SHARE of taxes, after all, they are millionaires, they can more than afford it.

I hate to see Mike Hot Dogs doors closed. But the reality is Cuomo upstart ny and McCarthy & Metroplex are the main CULPRITS why long time established businesses are closing their doors. Cuomo & McCarthy are just bad for business. They only care about squeezing the tax payers to give to their rich developer friends Galesi, Rush  Gaming, and tax exempt downtown businesses. Cuomo and McCarthy is hurting the tax payers and long time businesses with their bad policies! #VOTETHEMOUT

That is 1,000% the truth.

We haven't been to Mike's HD in a couple years, and yes, it does not have a pleasing look inside, it does look kind of dirty.  It would be nice if they could just replace the formica with new that would look the same, make everything look really clean.

But since they have been paying for the fancy new buildings of their competitors, they have no money to fix up their own place if they wanted to

Mike's is assessed at $132,700.

The city claims the actual full market value is $107,000.

Taxes are approximately $7,000 per year.

This is highway robbery.

Back in the seventies Californians got fed up with extreme property taxes and staged a tax revolt.

It was called proposition 13.

It won by a landslide.

It limited property taxes to never exceed 2% of the assessed value of any home.

The assessed value was determined by the actual price of the last sale of the property.

Properties throughout the city and county are taxed 4%, 10% and even higher if you base it on the last sale prices.

The reassessment scam was simply the government doubling their spendable incomes.

If the hot dog man REALLY thought his taxes were out of site...and was pi$$ed cause downtown is tax except....he would have taken the money and ran and left the dump to the city to deal with!! BUT HE DIDN'T....SO HE MUST BE OK WITH IT!!

Saying/doing nothing....shows support!!

and please don't give me the sob story of how it will ruin his credit.

We PERSONALLY know someone who filed bankruptcy one day....and opened another business under a new name the very next!

It was business as usual!! TRUTH!!!
