I don't have time to read thru all of these posts..........but are we to understand that someone is cleaning up property that belongs either to a private property owner OR town property for FREE???

Yes, and it has caused much outrage, because he places a small lawn care sign on the cleaned up properties.

It depends on your definition of "free"............................should the "free" cleanup of town property be accompanied by an advertisement place on town property....................my b**ch last year was the illegal placement of political signs on town property, now someone runs with my idea of an anonymous cleanup and advertises that he did it with a sign placed on town property....................whatever happened to random acts of kindness..........oh and I'm now the meanest most miserable person on the planet...........

So is this a sign left by a 'private company' who actually did the work? That is done ALL the time. No big deal!

Or is everyone here talking about a political campaign sign???

It was one of those small landscaping signs that said "another job done by Garrow Landscaping."

And his telephone number.

He's just a 21 year old kid that started a small business in Rotterdam.

Don't really care if the worker was 75 years old and don't care much on who it is either.
It is not uncommon for businesses to place their business signs on the property they serviced. It is done ALL OF THE TIME! So unless I'm missing something.......no big whoop here.....no?

His age is a mute point.  The question is, is there a code that restricts to placement of signs and personal advertisement on public property?  If there is, then he is wrong, regardless how noble his selfless act was(or not so selfless since advertisement isn't cheap).

What I think a good solution is, that the town announce a program allowing landscaping companies whose business address is in Rotterdam to advertise on Rotterdam public property for the upkeep of that property.  The town would not be responsible for the missing signs that would inevitably go missing, most likely removed by their competition.  But the program would still have to be administer properly to make sure it is fair and to be sure all landscaping companies have the same opportunity.

This is Rotterdam though, I wouldn't be surprised that there wouldn't be a flood of landscaping companies filing for DBA's during election years.

Ex:  Calder's Landscaping
      Lawns by Viscusi
      Marco's Mowing
      Santabarbara's Lawn Service.

       Buffardi's Antique's...oops...that one already exists.

And guess what.....there will be a competition of who does what and how good it is...

Pay attention people......The Veterans' Memorial will now be cleaned up by private citizens and donating their time and money...

no signs ....no grandeur....a well deserved volunteer project......

Take it up at the next TB meeting....instead of yakking your brains out on this blog....which produces nothing but hostile postings.....

beginning to think this whole blog business is foolish and immature////

I second the motion.

Perhaps they could even mow the parks.

But no new department to oversee the operation.

That would just nullify the tax savings.

Someone just told me if he had permission to clean up the properties and post the sign, that alias' actions could be considered vandalism.

Who is authorized to allow advertisement on public property?  What department is that?

I think I will name this:

"The Triangle Pantywaist Controversy"

because I am sure DV will somehow become a part of it in no time flat.

This sounds like an interesting conundrum. So this fellow cleans up the triangle and then once he removes all the other signs post his own business signs up in their place??? Is that correct? I would just suppose that when you volunteer to clean up a public property that you don't use it as a place to stick your signs. Those signs belong on public property where his jobs are being done- with the permission of the property owner. JUST like political signs.

I applaud anyone who cleans things
up but I don't agree that they should be posting their signs there. I hate those business signs up along the highway that say "Earn Money from home" or "we buy houses for cash" etc. I see them on right-aways and on telephone poles too. Lately I have been seeing churches advertise in this manner as well. It grosses me out. We just don't need that clutter on our roadsides and I am sure there is an ordinance agin it.

Agreed, advertising space can be rented out if he wanted to get his name out there. I'm all for him getting his business started and I hope he succeeds he just went about it the wrong way.

Telephone poles and freestanding yard/garage sale signs require no permission.

I just came through 5 corners and there were signs for a fund raising event and another for home repairs.

I think it's more of a legal unless stated otherwise issue.

Car washes to raise money, car show signs, you name it. There are tons of people advertising every day on public property.
