OK, so I understand your point that the jobs coming in at Railex are a success and that the Metroplex is what brought these in.  I question the fact that they are paying no, or next to no taxes to do so.  I just wonder...if you support this so much, then why is it that you don't buy the products that are brought in this way?  I mean really, if people say that they support it, then don't buy the products, how long will those 325 people stay employed if you keep buying from the local growers?

I guess what I'm saying is that you can't support both the bigger government AND the local growers.  It just doesn't make sense.  Funny how you support "IN SEASON direct from local growers," but you don't support Mr. Golub.  By the way, did you know that local growers can also take and sell their products to Mr. Golub, and they do???  Years ago, when I was in 4H, in the gardening program that they have, we used to grow vegetables in the garden and bring them directly to the warehouse as a vendor.  They would then send a check directly back to us as payment for the produce.  They would also speak to the people who were bringing it in, when they checked it to see that it was to the quality that they required, giving a good lesson to those children who would like to grow up and become farmers.

And isn't Price Chopper an example of what can happen if the government stays out of the way (with the exception of pulling the jobs out of Rotterdam, which was supported by more Metroplex money)?  Or do you think that they would still be the small little Central Market that they used to be way back when?

Personally, I like the fact that the local Price Choppers are now giving double coupons up to 99 cents.  A great break for those in the capital region that can plan ahead.

I choose to DIRECTLY support the farmers and producers -- that is my decision and I really don't care if Mr. Golub tripled the coupons -- it wouldn't change my mind.

If recollection serves me right, Price Chopper/Golub Corp benefitted from Metroplex funding (i.e., government
intervention) for the Freezer Building in the Rotterdam Industrial Park.  To suggest that the company's success resulted only
from competing in the free market is misleading .

Indeed, government intervention does often determine the winners and the losers in our capitalist system.

Price Chopper and Hanneford both sell local produce from many farms in this area so you would still be supporting the farmers by shopping in either store and saving on gas to boot.

Actually, Price Chopper and Hanniford buy it by volume.  The local farmer would sell rather their field of corn to one buyer than sit in front of their corn field and sell it 6 ears at a time.  But, then again, DVR sees the economic genius of Metroplex and subsidizing bar/restaurants.

Not all of their produce and other products come from local farms and producers.   Much of their produce comes from out of state and out of the country.  There are a number of farmer's markets close by .. and farm stands along the way .. that we don't have to make a special trip just to buy from them.

And to the idiot who posted the next post after yours -- have you ever heard of canning and freezing ???  I don't just buy 6 units of a particular fruit or vegetable at a time -- I buy some for immediate use and the rest to prepare an "put up" for future use.     BTW - except for  corn relish -- I don't particularly care for corn .. too high a sugar content ..  but I do love eggplant and green beans and peas.

Oh --- and ONLY buy tomatoes direct from the farmer ---  Price Chopper  and Hannaford keep green tomatoes in warehouses for months and then "gas" them to make them turn red.      Heirloom tomatoes are THE only way to go ...  for fresh eating,  making my signature tomato sauce and for making home made catsup.
Use the tomatoes from Price Chopper and Hannaford to play handball or tennis with -- that is all they are good for.

Ya, like you've ever counted a calorie - but just to show your intelligence, or lack thereof,

They're essentially the same

You have no idea how wrong that statement is.  Whoever told you that misinformation, walk up to them and punch them in the mouth.

My next door neighbor works for Price Chopper and orders produce from Shauls Farms in Schoharie all the time depending what's in season.

I have no knowlledge of HOW PriceChopper or Hannaford gets their produce - but it's not uncommon for stores to get tomatoes that are picked at the "breaking" stage, when they are still green but are just starting to turn pink / orange. I live not far from a Roma tomato packing plant - seeing green tomatoes going in is very common. High concentrations of Ethelyne gas are applied, that's what makes them the pretty red that everyone likes - however there still as firm as green tomatoes, giving them a longer shelf life.

In this case DV isn't 100% wrong - but again, I don't know how these two markets buy their produce - or how their suppliers ripen. One thing is for certain, neither Price Chopper - nor Hannaford have the ability to do this themselves - it's all up to their supplier.

I know that both stores get a lot of their produce from California and other western states  by way of the extreme train that delivers the produce to Railex in Rotterdam.
