People....people.....I didn't bother replying to his useless dribble because it is a fruitless effort. He just spins the tale the way he wants. He is totally dilussional and self-absorbed and really a waste of our efforts. He cannot be rehabilitated...he's an A$$MONKEY for life!
Now where does it say that Price Chopper and Hannaford buy produce from that supplier like you stated.
Tomatoes that are grown by the large producers for sale out of season -- are picked green and stored for months --- supermarket chains like Price Chopper and Hannaford can not magically produce tomatoes out of season. And -- IN SEASON -- I would much rather buy my tomatoes from the various farmers markets and produce stands in the are --- give Brown's and Pigliavento's and the new stand on Fort Hunter Road your business .. and enjoy locally grown produce instead of "frankenfruit".
And that article -- along with numerous others available on the web prove that my statement about "gassing" tomatoes was 100% accurate. So JoeBonehead and the rest of you were proven wrong.
“And yet our opponents tell us not to interfere with abortion. They tell us not to impose our morality on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth. Yet no one calls it imposing morality to prohibit the taking of life after a child is born. We’re told about a woman’s right to control her own body. But doesn’t the unborn child have a higher right, and that is to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” – Ronald Reagan

No A$$MONKEY...you are wrong and cannot listen to anything reasonable...you are just going to continue to spin your tales anyway your feeble pea brain comes up with ......what's sad is that you honestly believe yourself. There is absolutely no value to try and reason with you becuase you are too simple minded to grasp the most rudimentary points that are made. Have a nice day...now crawl back into the closet so you do what you always do and hope you don't get caught!!!!!!
I guess the people who drive these vehciles for a living, and the people in my company that make them, had better start looking for a new job because A$$MONKEY has a whole different slant on the movemenet of produce!!!! and yes A$$MONKEY, that's where I work and that is the equipment that I have been part of the design team on over the years......we are the world leader!!!!!

Those refers are actually designed with vents in the rear doors and the in the roof, to vent the ethylene gas during transit so produce doesn't over ripen - right? Tomato's produce ethylene gas, so you don't have to "gas" them, not venting them and allowing the gas to build up will ripen them also. Kind of like putting green banana's in a paper bag.

The reefers are insulated to prevent escape and allow better control of temperature. Great Dane recently announced new insulation in their reefers. Our units control temperature and monitor temperature using microprocessors, Out multi-temp units allow the reefers to be split into multiple sections with each one being refrigerted at different temperature. You can have tomatoes in one section, lettuce in another and fruit in another, and even flowers in another, each having their own temp control....like a multi-zone homeair-condtioning system. It is important to control each type of produce at a specifc temperture for that type of produce in order to retard the ripening process during transport. During off seasons, produce continues to be grown in warmer climates and transported to grocers....Mexico, Calif, Ariz, etc. and some coming from overseas (South America). Growing seasons stagger around the world, and farmers rotate crops to be able to continue generating revenue throughout most seasons. US grown produce finds its way to Europe and Asia as well, so it is not just domestic demand.
There are...I know a produce buyer that would buy hot house tomatoes and have the driver vent their trailer for a portion of the trip to keep the ethylene gas down. Whether it worked or not, that's another question. But there are vents on trailers.

Not all reefers are vented, but yes, many are. Venting used to be the norm. Todays equipment is so refined that it's not as necessary anymore. Vented reefers are really a customer requirement today and is based on the reefer's intended usage. Remeber, a truck load of tomatoes from CA to NY need to be refrigerated, but the return load may not be, or it may be a load that needs refrigertion AND venting....so that's why I say Cutomer specification!
Joe BoneHead --- the FACT is that commercial growers do PICK TOMATOES WHEN THEY ARE GREEN ... they are stored and gassed to turn them green right before delivery --- there have been reports on major television network news .... articles about it ... and you can find websites where experts have written about it.
The interesting thing is that those major network news reports interviewed commercial growers and ALL of those interviewed readily admitted that they pick them green, store them and as needed gas them to redden them right before shipping them out.
The only people denying it -- are you and a bunch of Nattering Nayboobs --- YOU ARE NOT A COMMERCIAL GROWER ... and I will believe the Commercial Growers before I believe you on the subject.
But you actually make my argument on another point --- the fact that produce now is shipped in from foreign countries when they are out of season here. That is ANOTHER reason to NOT buy the produce from the major supermarket chains. I choose to purchase naturally grown and raised food products that are grown and raised by AMERICAN farmers/producers IN SEASON ---- with special preference for the farmers/producers within New York State and/or a 100-150 mile radius of Albany.
That is why I will buy wine made by vineyards New York or New England before I buy wine produced a couple thousand miles away or overseas.
That is why I will buy fruit and vegetables direct from the farms and farmers markets in the area - as much as possible.
You may not like that because then you don't make any money shipping the "frankenfruit" in your reefers -- and to that I say --- TOO BAD ... it is my right to purchase what I want from whom I want and where I want. And, thankfully, millions of Americans are joining the Whole Food/Buy Local movement.
