ROTTERDAM
Plaza project progress muddled

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

Confusion surrounds the project to redevelop the long dormant Curry Road Shopping Center into affordable senior housing.
Town officials want to clarify their role in redeveloping the forlorn property after the deed to the property was transferred to the Rotterdam Industrial Development Agency without their approval. But Scott Krikorian, the IDA’s executive director, said he’s already given the Town Board all of the information he has on the project and is wondering why there’s a sudden second-guessing about the project.
“If they let me do my job, there will be shovels in the ground in three months,” he said Thursday.
Much of the confusion over the project seems to come from the recent change of administrations in Town Hall. A plan to have Clifton Park-based Forum Industries build 184 units of affordable senior housing was cultivated under the leadership of Republican supervisor Steve Tommasone, who forwarded a resolution transferring the formerly town-owned property to the IDA on his last day in offi ce in December.
But the new administration led by Supervisor Frank Del Gallo, a Conservative, and Deputy Supervisor Robert Godlewski, a Democrat, abruptly repealed this resolution in an effort to stop the transfer. Godlewski said the repeal of this resolution was somehow ignored and the deed to the property was transferred to the IDA on Jan. 5.
“We were under the impression that in fact we brought [the property] back under our control,” he said.
Now the board wants to know what oversight they have over the project, if any................>>>>.................>>>>......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01304&AppName=1

Godlewski has wanted to put all the town buildings and police under the same roof for a long time and now this is his chance to do it. The problem is acess in and out of the complex due to the heavy traffic on Curry Road and the increased time of response for police to the western end of town.

Are these people really this 'stupid' or are they just mis-informed? If this town board or 'no change' even breathes, suggests or mentions moving everything over to the Curry Plaza....they will get great resistance from the residents.

It may appear financially advantageous, but it is clearly the wrong location. You don't put safety 'anything' on a very busy, 2 lane 'street', next to a fire house, might we add!!! Even us everyday, run of the mill, high taxpaying residents know that!!!

Rotterdam has an opportunity to get this 'beast' back on the tax roll to help cushion our high taxes. We have been waiting long enough!

Filipe....I hope your post was just an assumption!

IDA: Plaza site needs new study

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

Another environmental study is needed before work to redevelop the dilapidated Curry Road Shopping Center can move forward in the state review process.
The Rotterdam Industrial Development Agency allocated $9,168 for an in-depth study of the property after a preliminary review revealed the potential of underground storage tanks at the site of a former garage at the Kmart building. But both county economic development officials and developers from the Clifton Park-based Forum Industries are confi - dent that the project to build 184 units of affordable senior housing will advance.
Ray Gillen, the chairman of the Metroplex Development Authority, which is handling administrative issues for the IDA, said the new study is a necessary precaution to ensure that the property is safe for the proposed housing units. He said the latest environmental study should take about six weeks and will unequivocally determine whether any contamination exists outside the area of the former dry cleaner.
“We need to know what the environmental conditions of the site are before we develop it,” he said Friday. “We’re going through the process in a methodically correct way.” .................>>>>..............>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00905&AppName=1
