Schenectady used be known as the city that lights and hauls the world.

All the taxpayer funded, tax exempt gin mills, and story in the paper today about the bars.  OK, it does mention outside the city, and I know it's been rather tradition, but that word Schenectady appears above the title, as opposed to "Capital Region."   Are the taxpayer funded, tax exempt gin mills suffering financially that the story focuses on Schenectady?

Gin mills downtown, great use of taxpayer money.

It's wrong to make people contribute to something they consider immoral. How do families affected by alcoholism, or who've had a loved one killed by drunk driving, or whose religion bans alcohol, feel about certain businesses getting preferential treatment, and their money? What if, instead of pushing him out, the city had given our money to the guy with the porn shop? Ridiculous comparison? Ask someone whose life has been ruined because of drunkenness/ alcoholism. I do not condemn drinking, or bars. I support people's right to enjoy alcohol if they choose to, but I also support the rights of those who choose not to support it.

Would everyone feel any differently if it was Walmart or Macy's or a car dealership that landed downtown and was TAX EXEMPT????

Tax exemption is the issue here. No matter 'what' landed on state street.....it STILL would have received the tax exemptions.

FOCUS folks...........FOCUS!!!

bt, I don't feel any differently about it, but there is a larger issue here, imo. There has been much in the news, and continues to be, about government forcing various individuals and groups to pay for birth control, because it's against their religion or something. We have quite a number of Schenectadians now for whom alcohol is against their religion or their values, yet our city is trying to dig our way out of the hole they dug us into almost exclusively through booze. And not just any booze. They don't mind if an older, non-crony drinking establishment goes under, it just leaves more room for the taxpayer supported gin mills.

Paul Mitchel is NOT a gin mill and is tax exempt.
Bow tie is NOT a gin mill and is tax exempt.
Villa Italia is NOT a gin mill and is tax exempt.
Proctors is NOT a gin mill and is tax exempt.
Apertivo(sp) is an eatery and is tax exempt.
Galesi's Center City(Johnny's) is NOT a gin mill and is tax exempt.
MVP is NOT a gin mill and is tax exempt.
....so the point is.....no matter what landed downtown....it would have still been tax exempt.

My point is, we have a preponderance of taxpayer supported gin mills, many consider alcohol a vice, why should people be forced to support something that goes against their religion, and have the city be bragging about all the bars.
BTW, businesses open every day without tax breaks, just not in the big money-grab that is downtown.

Welcome to collectivism...Eating pork is against people's religious beliefs, eating beef is against people's religious beliefs, eating non kosher is against people's religious beliefs, war and killing is against people's religious beliefs.  Unfortunately, the state doesn't really care about where you think your money should go. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, you are giving a minor example.  There are Arab Muslims whose lands and families are being bombed with bombs paid for with their tax money.  Pretty twisted.  They just need to vote harder in 2016.
