ll Schenectady woman triggers Ebola check
By Paul Nelson, Casey Seiler and Mike Goodwin
Updated 3:08 pm, Thursday, October 16, 2014

SCHENECTADY — The notification process regarding possible cases of Ebola got a test Wednesday after a woman who said she was in West Africa in September visited a medical clinic complaining that she was feeling ill.

However, authorities said Thursday they have determined she had come from Ghana, an African nation that has not been affected by the outbreak that has killed thousands in Africa.

Schenectady public safety officials were told by a local clinic Wednesday that the woman was from Liberia, one of the nations hardest hit by the virus, and was exhibiting flu-like symptoms, a possible sign of Ebola.

The woman's visit to the Hometown Health Center triggered an alert to the state and local health departments handling possible Ebola cases.

Joe Gambino, CEO of Hometown Health Center, initially said the woman claimed to be from Liberia. But after speaking at length with staff, he later learned there was confusion about which West Africans nation she had traveled to so clinic officials notified county and state health officials.

The nurse practitioner who examined the woman late Wednesday afternoon at the free health clinic allowed her to leave but followed the protocol. The nurse practitioner was told the woman was part of a family that had moved to Schenectady from Liberia.

Further investigation showed that the woman had been in Ghana, said Schenectady County spokesman Joe McQueen.

The woman had no fever and no contact for at least 21 days, the longest time it takes for someone to develop symptoms after exposure to Ebola, with anyone from Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea, the three countries fighting the current epidemic, McQueen said.

When asked specifically about the Schenectady situation, a spokeswoman for the state Health Department, responded in an email: "There are currently no suspected Ebola patients anywhere in" the state.

Gambino said Thursday morning that a woman arrived at the State Street, Schenectady clinic at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, complaining that she felt ill. Gambino was initially given conflicting dates about when in September the woman arrived but later determined she got here on Sept. 3.

"She came in not feeling well," said Gambino, later adding she showed no symptoms associated with Ebola.

The city's fire and police departments were informed of the clinic visit in an alert Wednesday that said the woman was part of a family from Liberia and had shown signs of flu-like symptoms, which can be similar to Ebola.

"This does not mean that the patient has Ebola but it does mean you should be aware that the potential exists," the document stated.

"Due to the nature of this incident it is prudent to look for signs of illness in people that you deal with and take appropriate actions and/or make notifications should you suspect someone has a similar illness."

Ebola is everywhere these days....in US and in the world........government has not been truthful and is not prepared to control this terrible disease...

listen to the news and see....and hear the same statements over and over.......we are at risk and there seems to be no protocol that works for this

disease.....CDC is lax......and they can't even give an answer as to how to control or even treat this disease.....

travel to and from Africa needs to end....but the airlines won't cooperate....it's all about $$$$$$$$$.....as usual....meantime we are at a high risk in the US..

and our government is hedging responsibility....

How come the woman's name wasn't released?  Does anybody find it bizzare that the media is reporting the first and last names of people that contracted a deadly virus?  The name of the  guy from Liberia had his name released while vomiting and hemeroging and basically dying from this disease.  Did he sign off to have his medical condition made public knowledge?

Nothing factual in this statement at all.

The paranoia over ebola is so overblown. Do you realize that even in Liberia only .001 percent of the population has been infected. In the US, 2 out of millions of people have become infected. 2.  2 bedside nurses who cared for a man with a high viral load and was projectile vomiting, having explosive diarrhea and bleeding out through anyplace that could seep blood. This isn't the type of disease that spreads easily through casual contact.

Mistakes have been made; some serious, some no more than PR screw ups. And, West Africa needs to gain some control of the spread-but that is difficult in a population that doesn't believe in science and has relied on shamans for their healthcare for far too long. (They also need to seriously change their funeral practices). We do not have an out of control problem. And while we don't have a medication that cures or a guaranteed fix, the medical community isn't completely clueless on how to treat the symptoms till, hopefully someone recovers.

you don't have to sign off.....according to the HIPPA laws, you become a public liability and the public is allowed to know...

ACA and digitization of medical records via the internet has made us all accessible to Homeland Security and international
records.....

the ACA will cease to be 'affordable' and will be sucked into the global security net and we will still be a rat in the cage....

no longer is your blood your own.

and remember, your employment number/tax number are all connected to your ACA number because the IRS will track your
'insurance coverage' 'protection money' that needs to be extorted from you.

insurance companies ARE the government....they always were only now they get a giant validation and an army behind them.

homeowners insurance
health insurance(medical)
car insurance
life insurance(which will actually be health insurance/SS)

if anyone thinks it was big business that did this you are sadly mistaken.....your feel good do gooders who think you can't take
care of yourself made sure they got the controls all in one place......

and they have an army to make you like it and they have speech writers to make you believe it......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

So anybody with an infectious disease has no right to privacy regarding their infection?  What's next, people with communicable diseases must be registered?

pretty much, if it's considered a threat to the population....however, the next generation will be happy with their 15 minutes
of fame,,,,facebook/american idol/public schools have all made this OK to them.....

people no longer understand that they are sovereign being with a right to privacy.....nor do they care as long as they get
recognized like the next hollywood star/politician/rich person etc......

envy/jealousy are also a weapon in matters of the public psyche control/movement......toss in a little $ penalty as trade for
play and your good to go....homeland security at it's best with all the best lawyers/legislators/guns behind them....

1984 and Demolition Man are here to stay unless the antidepressants and other pharma drugs used in public schools are
refused and removed....

we've made a bad bad bed....our posterity will sleep in it unless we destroy it.

No, their friends and families released their names. The first nurse was named when the media snooped through facebook until they figured it out.

There is an unnamed american patient being treated at Nebraska right now. (They were flown in after contracting it in Africa). Third friend, families, etc have no released their name or approved medical information to be shared so wr know nothing other than they exist and are being treated.

the general public doesn't care if their name is released.....medical records get hacked and that's where info is stored and it really doesn't
matter who knows that you have a wart or anything else....people need to tell other people to mind their business.....or at least grow
some balls to do it.....

again, the public is used to their info being in the public....America is one giant hollywood drama much like 'House of Cards in 90210'

this will be a test of the ACA/privacy/homeland security.....militarizing healthcare equates to no privacy much like in the military....

infectious patients = enemy

the chicken pox vaccination mandate is over blown much like Ebola cases and con tractability....as is the flu vaccine......

it's BUSINESS/CONTROL.....

simple mathmatics

the Army of health care workers will arise....you think the pentagon has a big budget, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.....

ACA will cease to be Affordable....

fear does wonders....that's how insurance companies/SS/medicare/medicaid/DSS get validated
