City leaders in Amsterdam, New York, who saw their hopes for a resort casino get dashed by a state gambling oversight board, are backing a $350 million casino 18 miles away in Schenectady.
The city council voted unanimously Tuesday to support the proposed Rivers Casino and Resort at Mohawk Harbor, according to Ray Gillen, chairman of the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority.
Both Gillen and David Buicko, chief operating officer at The Galesi Group in Rotterdam, which is developing the casino with Rush Street Gaming of Chicago, spoke about the project.
Amsterdam Mayor Ann Thane last week voiced her support for the casino during a presentation the developers gave in Albany to the New York Gaming Facility Location Board.
Although Thane is backing the Schenectady bid, the Montgomery County Legislature is instead supporting a competing casino proposal from the owners of Howe Caverns in neighboring Schoharie County.
The prospect of Amsterdam residents getting some of the 1,200 permanent jobs that will be created by a regional casino motivated government leaders to express their support.
A decision on who gets a casino license will be made this fall. Also competing for what's expected to be just one license in the Capital Region are developers in Rensselaer and East Greenbush.

I hope that we get the casino, but find it pretty funny that all these plans are trying to integrate family oriented activitys and attractions nearby.  Will we be looking back 10 or 20 years from now and seeing this as a big mistake.  Wondering why gambling addiction is so much higher?!?!?!?

I can't believe the argument is over who gets to be the licensed government app[roved gambling establishments, when gambling should not be allowed unless allowed for all people.

Just more government mafia control.

Amsterdam Mayor Thane is pandering to Rush Casino for campaign dollars to full her was chest. She has no chance at landing a casino in Amsterdam so this is the next best thing for her to do politically to raise funds for her campaign.

I dont understand your thinking. I agree with with some of the basic priciples- but I think you take it too far. ? For example do you hire a licenced contractor to work on your house .?

Im sure you dont require a business license or liability insurance.

For me it depends on who, what and where .

Do you think an architect shoud need a license?

How about the electrician ?

A painting contractor on Nantucket Island  working from architects spects need a LICENSE

Some guy painting your house mayb not so much

How about the electrican  ?

Because in your world, unlicensed people have no rights.

Rights are for everyone, not just government licensed entities.

If gambling is illegal, then it is illegal for all.

Issuing licenses to not be charged with a crime, is not equal treatment under the law.

This is a clear violation of the US Constitution.
