I am one of the people who missed the April 1 opt out deadline because when I read the letter, I only saw the May 30 PAYMENT deadline.  I NEVER TURNED THE LETTER OVER.   When I went to the clerk's office, I thought the clerk was rude and quite unaccommodating in trying to help me opt out.  Is it even LEGAL
what they did?  I bet some crafty lawyer can sue the town to get them to reverse this "legislation" or at the very least, let people opt out past the deadline.  (I left out the word "deceptive" because it was my own stupidity for not turning the letter over (or did they plan it that way?)).

A lawsuit such as that would cost the town thousands and cause a ton of aggravation in the clerk's office.   Tee hee . . . who's in?

In relation to doused comments.

The leaders in this town for sure screwed this up royally.  There are people I'm sure have their winter homes and suppose they didn't get the letter.  I didn't pay close enough attention, for the opt out to be notarized, did it have to be a notary within the state of NY?

The whole timing of this was bad because this was done AFTER the budget was passed.

And the leaders saying the crap about being unable to provide the service "for free" was as big a BS story as DV claiming the city is in a renaissance.  We ALWAYS have paid for the service through our taxes.

If people have been paying taxes and that service was part of the tax, now that they are charging a special tax for it and half the residents  opted out (and some swindled into it), shouldn't they get $50 taken off their taxes because they are not benefiting from the service?

I guess the same could be said for the Lock system on the river, why should my taxes go to support the luxury of the rich?  The river isn't
used for commerce anymore, I don't own a boat and maybe the Stockade won't flood if the river is returned to its natural state as a large stream.

That's so true.  Stop forcing all of us to pay the "BS of the canal" if we don't use it.  Make it a user fee only for those who boat or fish there.

That's just what I said to, why should we pay for snowplowing?  We have a vehicle that can get through snow, why should we pay to have our street plowed.  We can sweep the street in front of our house, so how about a "sweeper fee" that others can pay.  And instead oif us paying downtown, those who use it can pay for it.

the fact that you had to turn the letter over to OPT out......it was a crafty plan...and it worked.....

and if the TC was rude in not helping to opt out under the circumstances....that is really absurd.....

how much was collected???.......is there going to be transparency in that?????????....

this is a job for a "superman" lawyer....

I spoke to my bank manager and he said that there have been a lot of complaints about this, including from people who did not get the letter in on time.  This sounds like an easy an profitable lawsuit for a good lawyer.

You obviously are NOT a real Libertarian.  You want the government to cleanup YOUR yard waste.  You claim to be against big government -- EXCEPT when it is cleaning up YOUR mess.  That makes you even worse than a dim bulb -- a burnt out bulb.

The $50 only pays for a portion.  Property taxes subsidize the balance of the cost.

I don't think that ANY taxpayer dollars should be going to brush/yard waste pickup.  Eliminate it ALTOGETHER and cut town taxes.
