I personally think its sneaky that they put the instruction to opt out as the very last sentence, and it has to be notarized- completed and handed in within the next month. Ridiculous.  Anyone who reads this letter fast may miss this point - my guess is that is what they are hoping for.  Listen its not like Rotterdam provides a lot of services to its residents, in comparison to many other towns/cities, so I think the fee is un-called for.  Really where the heck are all these taxes we pay going .....

So I assume this will be an "annual" event since the option to opt "out" or "in" is probably yearly since it is an annual fee.  Would that be correct??

Then watch each year as the fee is increased

A TAXPAYER SHOULDN'T HAVE TO MAKE THAT MUCH OF AN EFFORT TO OPT OUT OF GOVERNMENT SERVICES.....

GET OFF MY BACK!

do we opt out of food stamps
do we opt out of heap

why should the taxpayers have to hunt down/fill out/get notarized a fu(king 'coupon' or 'rebate' on government taxes???????

that just means it's all a FARCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rotterdam is just following the same path that the city did when they needed more money than the cap would allow. Politicians think that we're too stupid to realize that a fee is really a tax. Remember what was done and in November and vote accordingly.

The incumbent holdovers on the board have been a real disappointment. Two cops and and copservative. This is gnawing at many residents and elections can't come soon enough. Word around town is that many Dems are jumping ship and are looking for endorsements for 2015. The three cop leaners have been a disaster according to many Rotterdam lifers and the term endings can't come soon enough.

They promised nooooo layoffs and they did it. No increased spending and they did it. Tax cap???  The hell with that. Just raise fees and salaries, create new civil service positions. A legal intern??  For what??

Maybe someday Rotterdam will get it right. Thoughts??

I'd like to think so. I tend to lean toward optimism even though most here are eternal pessimists. Ah well, to each his own.

I'm an enigma, even to myself.

Blame Buffardi for Rotterdam brush fee

Homeowners recently received a letter from the town informing them of the new brush fee that was adopted by the Rotterdam Town Board on Feb. 26 [Feb. 28 Gazette].

To be clear, this fee was conceived by the town administration prior to me taking office (Jan. 1). In fact it was passed by incumbent Supervisor Harry Buffardi along with incumbent Deputy Supervisor William Calder and incumbent Councilman Mike Viscusi, and received absolutely no support from the officials you elected last November.

I sincerely wish they would have heeded the objections of town residents as well as the two newly elected board members (Councilman Larry Larmour and Councilman Joe Villano) and could have come up with a better way to address how the brush pick-up program expense can be covered with the existing tax levy. In fact, they had already built the fee into the 2014 budget which they passed last fall.

I was directed by Supervisor Buffardi to advise residents of the new fee that was created without my involvement. In this case, I am truly “just the messenger.” I will continue to strive to provide all the town residents with this vital service in the most efficient and cost-effective manner in hopes that such an additional fee may be eliminated.

First of all we all know Lawrence didn't write that. Secondly his name is afixed to 10,000 parcels mailed out now he is back pedalling. I know for a fact that he was highly involved in the planning and could have distanced himself at anytime. He is an independently elected official. All he had to do was say "NO". Btw he wasn't going to take the raise if he got elected....Lmao!!!!

First of all...no we don't know if lawrence wrote that or not......does it matter?

Second....no we don't know for a 'fact' that this guy was highly involved in the planning. obviously only you do and perhaps ROTTERdamians can expect that you will be at the next ROTTENdam town board meeting and make that public....for the record....yes?

Unless of course this is ROTTENdam politics as usual......perhaps?

just sayin'
