Man arrested for ninth time on drunken-driving charges BY STEVEN COOK AND MICHAEL GOOT
Gazette Reporters

A Schenectady man was arrested Wednesday for the ninth time on drunken-driving charges.
Kenneth Conner, 54, of 139 Elder St., was pulled over by Rotterdam police on Patton Drive around 8:30 p.m. for an equipment violation, according to police spokesman Lt. Jason Murphy.
An officer observed that Conner appeared to be intoxicated, Murphy said, and he was found to have a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent — almost twice the legal threshold for intoxication.
Conner was charged with felony driving while intoxicated. He was arraigned by Judge Kevin Mercoglan in Rotterdam Town Court and sent to the Schenectady County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Wednesday’s arrest was Conner’s ninth on DWI charges over a 34-year period.
State Department of Motor Vehicle records show Conner was most recently convicted of driving while intoxicated in Schenectady for a 2007 arrest. He was sentenced to a $500 fine and five days in jail. His license was also revoked.
He later completed the Drinking Driver Program and the revocation was cleared in May 2010 and Conner got his license back, records show. Murphy said the license was still valid Wednesday.
Felony drunken driving charges typically follow a second arrest over a span of 10 years. The exact dates of Conner’s other arrests and convictions were unavailable Thursday.
Conner was convicted in connection with a 1996 Albany County drunken driving arrest and sentenced to one to three years in state prison.
He later was sentenced to 1.5 to three years in prison in 2004 for a non-driving while intoxicated case from Saratoga County, records show.
Though Conner got his license back after his 2007 conviction, someone with his record would now be subject to a lifetime review by the DMV, according to regulations instituted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last month.
Anyone with five or more alcohol or drug-related convictions over a lifetime will have their license permanently revoked. ............................................>>>>..........................................>>>>...........................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01202&AppName=1

just because your license is revoked doesn't mean you don't drive....and don't tell me this guy should be in jail for the rest of his
life....or do we like to pay for 'safety'....

Really?  For a pre-crime?  You people are scary who advocate the catch tag and release program on their fellow citizens.

1. Deregulate Taxis and people could afford to not drive.

2. People drive after drinking because taxi prices are too high.

3. People drive drunk because local bars have been zoned out of existence making people travel to drink.

People drive drunk because people always have and always will.

Great view points.....but what does that have to do with this guy 9th DWI arrest. Do you think he should drive again. Obviously he needs professional help.

At taxpayer expense of course.

He made the CHOICE to drink
He made the CHOICE to drive

People claim drinking is an addiction, but he made the CHOICE to drink.   No one held a gun to his head and forced him to drink

I guess now we will hear of yet another "disorder"      Driving while drunk will be defined as an addiction.   Putting the key into the ignition while drunk is an addiction

Put a darn microchip of some sort, deep inside his system that's programmed somehow to stop him from driving when drunk.   How about a chip that gives him a shock when he drinks?   Technology is probably there.

But put the bill on him by garnishment from his bank account, wages, assets, to insure he pays the bill and not the taxpayers.

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.

speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Now does he need "professional help" because he was caught by police or because he drinks alcohol?

I used to hang out at the Union Inn years ago before it was sold to the current owner, and I'll tell you what, those off duty cops and Schenectady County Corrections Officers drove out of there WASTED on a daily basis.  They never got a DWI - surprising.  I wonder if you think they needed professional help.  Or is a badge all the professional help you need to conceal a person’s alcoholism.

I can introduce you to a couple of people that have driven legally drunk on a weekly basis for YEARS and never were caught and were never in an accident.

DWI is a revenue generator.  The police and lawyers LOVE this guy with 9 DWI's.

First and foremost.....remember 'drunk driving'is a CASH COW!!!
They KNOW these folks are going to violate AGAIN which equates to MORE MONEY!!!

Second....before you get out  your pitchforks.....had a conversation with a 'well known someone' who's kid was stopped for driving while intoxicated.
They checked the license....recognized the name and YUP..........was let go!!

One's a CASH COW.........and one's CONNECTED!!!

So let us not be too quick to condem.

and do any of you know a family that has "grieved" over someone who was killed by a drunk driver???

have any of you seen an accident up front involving a drunk driver???

apparently not......it is not a "revenue" catcher.....it's more about the cost of a funeral....sadly

and about the law that gets away with it???......they all needed help...years ago it was "ok".....today not so much......

Think  about the victims of drunk drivers.....doesn't that do anything to your conscience???....

ooops....have another drink on me...

He may never get a license again, but I'm sure he will still drive when the need arises.

People will do whatever they need to do.

Correct. Operating machinery safely while intoxicated hurts no one.

Arresting people for being likely to cause injury should be applied to sports as well as drinking and driving.

If a drunk person can pass a road test. He should be allowed to drink and drive.
