~ A 93-year-old Tennessee woman who cleaned the state Capitol for 30 years, including the governor’s office, says she won’t be able to vote for the first time in decades after being told this week that her old state ID failed to meet new voter ID regulations. Thelma Mitchell was even accused of being an undocumented immigrant because she couldn’t produce a birth certificate:
Mitchell, who was delivered by a midwife in Alabama in 1918, has never had a birth certificate. But when she told that to a drivers’ license clerk, he suggested she might be an illegal immigrant. Thelma Mitchell told WSMV-TV that she went to a state drivers’ license center last week after being told that her old state ID from her cleaning job would not meet new regulations for voter identification.
The incident is the just latest in a series of reports of senior citizens being denied their constitutional right to vote under restrictive new voter ID laws pushed by Republican governors and legislatures. These laws are a transparent attempt to target Democrat constituencies who are less likely to have photo ID’s, and disproportionately affect seniors, college students, the poor and minorities.

Why is this? Are they too dumb to know how to obtain a photo ID? Being a senior or a college student or a poor/minority person makes no difference. The law is the law....yes? This is the most absurd rhetoric I've heard yet out of the media! |

This happened during the time of the whig and federalist and I forget the name of the rest of the parties.....they began passing laws that they claimed would safe guard Americans or that would include immigrants because they are Americans blah blah blah......this is an OLD TRICK.....SAVE A DIFFERENT NAME....... |

How did the media go about verifying she was born by a midwife in 1918? The media gets more and more ridiculous. I swear the state writes this stuff and gives it to news organizations.
If everyone can vote without identification, then everyone can file taxes without a social security number, and nobody has to sign up for selective services. That's a good compromise. Since national borders are just arbitrary lines in the sand, why disclose your identity to the ANY STATE AGENCY at all? This is beginning to sound like a good idea. |

This woman could vote this year with her existing state issued identification, that she has used to vote for decades. The only change is a NEW REPUBLICAN voter ID Law, that was put in place, that will disenfranchise existing voters. Most of them who vote Democrat. (Which was the purpose of the law) |

So right wing southern tea party militia type registered Republicans are more likely to have their government papers? I'd like to see the statistical sample this news organization was given to verify this vast right wing conspiracy of disenfranchisement. This isn't news, it's fiction. It's like a Michael Moore docudrama. You present it as fact with lots of loaded language and hope nobody questions the facts. This is what they teach in journalist school? If this isn't opinion buried as objective news, I don't know what is.

The US Department of Justice took an important step in combating the epidemic of Republican vote suppression efforts on Friday. The Justice Department blocked a South Carolina law requiring voters to present photo identification, because the law would disproportionately disenfranchise minority voters. South Carolina is one of the states that under the Voting Rights Act (VRA), due to a history of discriminatory practices, must obtain pre-clearance from the Justice Department for new voting requirements. The Justice Department must certify that such laws are not discriminatory in their impact, not just in their intent. A state has the right to make sure everyone who votes is eligible to do so due to the recent rash of voter fraud in recent elections. |

Other than on FoxSnooze, I haven't heard of any voter fraud in recent elections. NONE! I'm sure they exist but I haven't heard of it. Findings from the Brenner Center for Justice: Actual Voter Fraud is EXTREMELY rare! * Fraud by individual voters is both irrational and extremely rare. * Many vivid anecdotes of purported voter fraud have been proven false or do not demonstrate fraud. * Voter fraud is often conflated with other forms of election misconduct. * Raising the unsubstantiated specter of mass voter fraud suits a particular policy agenda. You don't read the local papers do you Box? There was voter fraud in Troy during the last election. Voter fraud in Indiana during primary elections. Acorn employees went to jail for forging signatures for voter registration. Much of the fraud was done with absentee ballots. Al Franken was elected due to prisoners voting when not eligible to do so and allowed Franken to become a Senator and cast a vote for Health-Care when one vote could have been the difference in pass or fail. Any voter fraud is too many. |
