SCHENECTADY
First sewer plant cost OK’d
Occupy member backs takeover

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

In the first of what critics say will be many unexpected costs, the city is buying three trucks to help it run the sewage treatment plant next year.
On Monday, the City Council approved the $93,000 expense, which will be borrowed by the sewer fund.
Mayor-elect Gary McCarthy had hoped the current contractor, Veolia, would provide the city with a new truck because the city gave Veolia a truck when it took over the plant decades ago.
But even if the trucks had been free, some critics say the cost of benefits for 22 new city employees will eventually outweigh the $1 million that McCarthy says the city will save by running the plant.
The city expects to hire most of the current staff of the plant, which it would have paid Veolia $7.52 million next year to operate.
Resident Mary McClaine told the council that it should also take into consideration the cost to maintain the trucks, not to mention insuring and fueling them.
“What savings are these?” she said. “Taxpayers will save nothing with this takeover.”
But a new group, Occupy Schenectady, sent a spokesman to stand in favor of the takeover.
“We think it’s great that the city is taking back a public service,” said resident Michael Tracy-Ireland. “We love the fact that it’s union jobs with livable wages and pensions. We think everyone should have that.”
After the meeting, Tracy-Ireland said the Occupy Schenectady group is not sleeping in tents on a piece of public property, as groups did in Albany and many other cities.
“It’s kind of a different Occupy. It’s more of a consciousness,” he said. “It’s less of a struggle over real estate and more one of substantive issues.”
In other business, the City Council voted to buy Crime Atlas software, a system that will allow police officers to see crime trends from their in-car laptops. Until now, they have had to ask the city’s crime analysts to do special reports whenever they suspected there was a crime trend in their patrol area.
The software costs $10,000, with a $2,000 annual maintenance fee. It will be purchased with funds forfeited by convicted criminals.
Also Monday, the State Street Presbyterian Church asked the council to immediately forgive an old tax bill. ...............................>>>>............................>>>>.............................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00901&AppName=1

The Occupy Schenectady group is as corrupt as the Mayor double-dipping pension scheme.

As long as the City taxpayers pay more ...who the hell cares right? These occupiers aren't taxpayers, the last occupier interviewed lives at the YMCA and collects food stamps. They have no clue that most of the money lost in the taxbase is all Downtown...go occupy Marcella's, occupy Villia Italia, go to Transfinders and proctors.

But knowing this would take research, not simply listening to gossip in a coffee shop in the Stockade. They should have asked McCarthy about the TU article regarding his collecting a pension and receiving a mayoral salary....but I doubt these folks are able to read ....

Schenectady, where every inch of real estate is either government owned or a non-profit...And the Schenectady Occupiers want more government employees.  Do they even know how government workers get paid?  I'm sure they do, since it is obvious Occupy Schenectady is a front group for labor unions.

Does this idiot pay any City taxes? Schenectady is the only local City that actually increased spending. Now the Mayor Elect wants to take over the s*** plant to "save" money. They're in total economic free fall and they want to increase taxes, increase fees and hire more employees. Then they wonder why 800 properties are abandoned and median prices are tanking. You can't make it up.

Taking over the sewer plant will cost the city a ton of money in the future for salaries, pensions, benefits and maintenance costs.

Not according to the Mayor Elect. He said that the City will save over a million dollars! And the Gazetto actually reports this as if feasible. Where did they study finance?

It must be due to the Keynesian Economics course that they all took.

Yes, the politicians will go hat in hand to the State and Federal government for fresh money hot off the printing press or money from China will pay for this "livable wage"...Then the rest of us in the private sector will jump back on the hamster wheel and work twice as hard for half as much to pay it back.

At some point the hamster on the wheel either catches on that they are going nowhere or they die from exhaustion.

By the way that the citizens voted, they havent all caught on yet. The death from exhaustion will come this year as the new "Super Surcharged" Tax bills come out and the city hammers the codes, fees and fines on the citizens and visitors.  2012 is going to be a doozy.

Another option is that the Hamster will quit running on the wheel and do what the rest of the residents are doing and stand in line down at the DSS building with their hands out.

But over half have. The occupy idiots can't fade away fast enough. Don't try and dig what taxpayers say. The way McCarthy is imploding 2012 should be a real laugh riot. He's melting faster than the witched witch in a pail of pollution plant water. Pass the unsalted popcorn.

Sch’dy sewer plant is back where it belongs

Re Dec. 10 article, “City opts to run sewer plant”: It is gratifying, as a taxpayer, to see the Schenectady City Council and mayorelect [Gary McCarthy] putting city wastewater employees back on the city payroll.
City services should be performed by city employees, where there is no profi t motive but rather a civic motive to strengthen the common good. All levels of government can learn from this example: stop contracting services out.
Every contracted service transfers public money into private hands. Typically it means workers are paid less, with few or no benefits, so the contractor can make a profi t.
Keep public money in the public realm and keep the common good under the umbrella of the taxpayers. No more profi t-taking at the public trough.

The Rev is very concerned about somebody running the sewer plant making a profit but ignores the fact that the city employees will cost a lot more than a private company making a little profit due to pensions. salaries, and benefits.

When he says "we", does he mean the mouse in his pocket?
