200 years ago -- it made sense to take an area the size of Schenectady County and divide it into 1 city and 5 towns --- eventually the village form of government was created by the state and 2 of those were added.

12 years into the 21st Century --- with modern transportation and communications --- we don't need 8 different municipal governments and dozens of other taxing districts ---------------- CONSOLIDATION WOULD MEAN LESS GOVERNMENT ... because it would reduce the number of governments and eliminate redundant overhead costs.

All the other BS that the nayboobs posted about centralizing government at the national level or comparing consolidation to the Obama Health Care Plan ------------- are just red herrings .. lies told to confuse and mislead others.

It's the unions that are killing the taxpayers!! It's funny how when a school budget comes out, they blame heating costs and gasprices and needing new structures for some stupid reason or another. BUT NOT ONCE......do they stand up to the unions for the taxpayers! They cave and give them everything and anything they want.

I wish I were a teacher. What a job, huh! You can fail repeatedly at your job....show a decline in educating....AND STILL BE GUARANTEED A PAYCHECK WITH LIFETIME BENEFITS AND HARDLY NO CHANCE FOR LOSING YOUR JOB!!!!

It's the unions that are behind this consolidation issue. They want to secure their place in line at the bank and the hell with the taxpayers. Don't believe me? I have relatives that are employed with school districts!!! They are killing the taxpayers.

You would NOT need 6  Superintendents for 1 school district.    You would NOT need 6 Business Managers for 1 school district -- It would be possible to eliminate  close to a million dollars in salaries for the TOP administrators ... and I am pretty sure that there would be additional savings.

Furthermore -- a lot of money can be saved by better utilization of existing classroom facilities .. rather than one district borrowing money to build more class room space while another district is "moth-balling" surplus classroom space.

I'm sure that the consolidated school district would only need 1 superintendent and 5 assistants. 1 BA and 5 assistant managers to handle the business concerns. No savings on any buildings because the administrators would need a new mega school campus to handle all those students complete with a communications system between buildings. Savings to the taxpayer a negative 15 million dollars and the cost is expected to grow as years go by.

You are free to make stupid illogical fantasy predictions --- but I stand by my proposal and will work tirelessly to achieve consolidation of school districts -- consolidation of municipalities --- and the creation of newer, more enlightened forms of government including  "regional level government units" to replace the outdated "county level government units".

BTW -- the United Kingdom works very well with only a national level and a local level of government --- I propose that New York State eliminate the outdated "county level" of government and replace it with a "regional level of government".   This way we could downsize from 62 counties -- to maybe 20 ( plus or minus) "regional governments" in the state.

By the way, that "outdated 'county level' of government" you state you want to eliminate IS the regional government.

For example:   Albany County, Southern Saratoga County, Schenectady County and Rensselaer County could be consolidated under a Capital District "regional government unit".  Some redrawing of municipal lines within the region would be necessary --  along with rewriting the legislation regarding the municipal level of government altogether   (abolishing villages altogether, redefining cities and town, etc)  ... more along the way  incorporated areas and unincorporated areas are treated in Canada and some other states and countries.

Bottom line............it is the teacher's unions that are killing the taxpayers. Consolidation will NOT remedy that! The only remedy to getting a handle on school taxes is a strong school administration and the taxpayers! The taxpayers can not sustain the public section unions any longer! And again......consolidation will not remedy that....it will only create a larger political lobbying block with no reduction in cost or a promise of increased education to the taxpayers and students.

Bottomline --- the state legislature needs to draft a single piece of legislation -- abolishing all existing school districts -- and creating 62 new school districts -- 1 per county.  The legislation can be proposed in 2012 and passed into law --- effective date --- July 1, 2013 or July 1, 2014.    Problems solved.

You stated that in the past tense -- and since my proposal was not adopted yet .. there is no way that it could have helped or hurt any school district yet.

But if you are referring to the merger of Mont Pleasant High School and Linton High School --- AGAIN -- I remind you that  the Schenectady City School District has existed for over 80 years  and that  Mont Pleasant High School and Linton High School WERE TWO HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE SAME  SCHOOL DISTRICT.  So your constantly bringing them up isn't a viable argument against my proposal  and -- because you keep repeating the same ridiculously incorrect belief -- people are starting to say that you lost what little credibility you previously had.

AND it wasn't a good idea IN the same school district.....MONT PLEASANT is now for the 'special kids'....it's like a 'school work prison'....what the F do you think will happen when all are made larger?

you have no foresight except that which enables large amounts of power to be placed in a small amount of hands......
