ROTTERDAM
Micro-turbine at Maple Ski Ridge is first in the area
Wind tower generates just 2 kilowatts
BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

Rotterdam’s fi rst power-generating wind tower won’t be nearly as grandiose as the last one proposed in the town.
The 2-kilowatt-producing vertical-axis wind turbine at the Maple Ski Ridge measures about 26 feet tall, which is less than a tenth the size of the failed tower project General Electric proposed building near I-890 in 2008. In fact, the odd-shaped structure near the ski center’s lodge and bunny slope is small enough that it could easily be confused with a cell tower.
“It doesn’t go any higher than the standard parking lot light fi xture,” said Kate Michener, a spokeswoman for Maple Ski Ridge.
The small turbine won’t produce nearly the power as larger ones, such as the Jiminy Peak wind tower, which produces about 33 percent of the ski resort’s total energy demand. Instead, Michener said the small device will help reduce the electricity Maple Ski Ridge draws from the grid, help lower its power bills and will help make the business a bit more environmentally friendly.
“It’s by no stretch of the imagination enough to offset the power used to operate the chair lift,” she said Tuesday. “But it’s a little something.”
Titan Power Systems offered to install the tower for Maple Ski Ridge at a discount. The Rensselaer County-based company had constructed it for a different customer to film its installation, but the project never advanced. ............................>>>>......................>>>>........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01402&AppName=1

This is great -- we need more alternative energy projects in our town and county.   Solar panels on all town buildings -- more energy efficiency by consolidating the far flung town departments to a single campus.

I agree the town shoud look into more wind energy at town buildings however Photovoltaic panels do not payoff in our region unless your receive some sort of incentives.

Schenectady Pol's Plan to Go Green
Submitted by Ilene Kaplowitz on Wed, 2007-04-11 17:53.

Schenectady County Legislator Joe Suhrada (R-Rotterdam) announced a countywide plan for an Alternative Energy Program today.

Suhrada's plan includes five key components to reduce pollution and dependency on foreign energy:

1. Funding in the county's 2008 budget for alternative energy generation

2. Tax credit for business and homeowners who install solar and wind power

3. Create a tax exemption for alternative energy equipment

4. Match funds to each municipality that installs green power for their facilities

5. Use net metering in business and government

Suhrada's announcement follows suit with NYLCV's latest mantra around climate change, "think globally, act locally."

actually - I have supported alternative energy for MANY years -- going back into the 1970's --- I am NOT saying that I would have supported this proposal by that legislator  and my guess is that there was something substantively wrong with the proposal if he couldn't convince a majority of legislators to go along with it.

Yeah, the problem lies in the "R" after his name. Or, the majority is too stupid to have understood what those terms and the overall subject matter meant (likely)...Working together works! (when the people you work with are not Republican.)

Surhada was known to put forth proposals that had all sorts of problems -- the Democrats will work with Republicans .. Surhada NEVER wanted to work with the Democrats.

Green-all well and good.   However, as in our case, the less energy we use form Nat'l Grid the more our delivery charge goes up to compensate the less revenue brought in by our cutting back on consumption.   After all, they have stockholders to pay off, so the $$$$ must come from somewhere.   They don't make as much if we all conserve/cut back.   So turn up the heat this winter and be warm.   One way or another they will get your $$$$.   BTW our unoccupied lower flat in our house had a gas usage of +$8.00 and the delivery charge was _+25.00.   We noticed over a scan of previous bills the more usage the less the delivery charge was.   Google this ripoff of the delivery charge with NG.   You'll see 100's of commentarys.

when they say they 'break things up'...it's for public perception.....and all they do is 'pay' for another railway switcher to control that part of the railway......and then we all feel better

And with County Leg. MacDonald stating, in a recent Gazette article, that the county would save +$20,000.00 a year in part by going solar, you have to wonder with less usage will their delivery fee go up to negate much of those perceived savings.   Providing NG will still be supplying a part of the countys supply needs.
