Medicaid at issue for transgender surgery
Panel studies procedures as way to cut costs for mental health and drug abuse care

By MICHAEL VIRTANEN Associated Press
Published 12:01 a.m., Friday, September 30, 2011

ALBANY -- A panel advising Gov. Andrew Cuomo on ways to revamp Medicaid has proposed the program that pays for low-income residents' health care cover surgery and therapy for transgender residents.

Cuomo earlier this year appointed a task force to overhaul Medicaid, which paid $53 billion for medical care in New York last year, and cut costs. A group of health care professionals examining disparities in coverage is expected to decide next week where the transgender proposal fits on its list of priorities.

Advocates say there's limited data on the state's transgender population, but the change could affect thousands of residents and help cut Medicaid costs for their mental health and drug abuse treatment. California and Minnesota already provide Medicaid coverage for transgender surgery and hormone replacement therapy, which the American Medical Association supports......................>>>>...............>>>>................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/news.....25.php#ixzz1ZQwkodn1

A decision has to be made here - are we doing socialized medicine or not? Because if we're not, this lunacy has to end. We keep expanding the definition of what is covered for low-income people while the middle class gets stuck footing the bills.

Let's look at the middle class people with children or their teens dying of cancer. Maybe a middle class family with a baby born with severe abnormalities  - where are their governmental hand-outs for these individuals.

The government either needs to get out of it or take it over because this pendulum has little rope left.

And look, there goes Schenectady County taxes up again, because of another state mandate, inside a federally mandated program.  I wonder, which one of the County Legislators do you think will stand up and say something about this at our next Legislature meeting?  Which one is reaching out to our state legislators to ask that they don't allow this to go through?

what an f'en pot of crap......survival is in the what? anyone? anyone?.....INDIVIDUAL......I can't make you want to live (key word, HAPPILY) even if I cut off your breasts or testicles and change it all around.......just like a giant flat screen tv
doesn't make ya happy just because you wanted it....although the tv is cheaper, there's no therapy involved.....

For sure !!!!!!

Hey here's an idea, elect a president that knows how to help the economy, get rid of waste and regulations so that people can work and buy there own insurance and if they want elective surgery they can pay for it themselves.

I just went back and forth with my neurologist. He didn't want to prescribe my multiple sclerosis medication because he said I needed to have cognitive testing. Well I told them I couldn't afford it and I want my medicine which I pay in full MYSELF and that he had no problem prescribing when I first saw him. The nurse asked me why don't I apply for medicaid. I told her first its really none of her business (said it nicely) and second I WILL NOT use others tax money for my choices. I choose to take the alternative medicine I'm on because it costs about thirty dollars a month rather than go on a conventiional medication which would cost thousands a month. And the medicine I take has no side effects and I feel it is working.

Whether you like transgendered people or not is not the issue. The issue is the mandate that drives up the cost of HI in this state.

So 'elective surgery' is considered a 'medical issue' now?

Guess the wife can get her face lift now too, huh? What about the 'hair club for men'? That should be covered too!

anything can be medical when they put it into the psychiatric realm......everyone had better be very very careful at the MD's.....once national healthcare get's all it's legs the MD's cease to be your friend or personal choice......

and we all know about the 'seekers' of anything medically wrong with them....they will be the poster children just as the 'poor frail pathetic elderly' are used as podium pucks.....forget about anyone with a brain tumor....
there's no effort needed via fund raisers....YOU WAIT IN LINE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE....forget your chase of edgy treatments....the government will make sure you are 'equalized'.........

I think genital reassignment is a little more complicated than a face lift

This is not a simple matter of an addatwatomy or addadictomy, this is a matter of making all New York health insurance buyers pay for coverage they will most likely never need. I remember getting health insurance which was experience rated when I was in my early 20s. It was $60 a month and was for general catastrophic care. Of course the brilliant liberals made that idea of common sense defunct and passed mandates to drive up the cost of HI for all people by making every form or conceivable coverage mandatory. They could not "discriminate" between men and women or young and old, etc. That is how they screwed up America - intentionally regulating us into bankruptcy. They continue the march of insanity.

MikeChristine wants to know if he/she can get government money for being a hermaphrodite.

“And yet our opponents tell us not to interfere with abortion. They tell us not to impose our morality on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth. Yet no one calls it imposing morality to prohibit the taking of life after a child is born. We’re told about a woman’s right to control her own body. But doesn’t the unborn child have a higher right, and that is to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” – Ronald Reagan
