By creating a tax system that divides the citizenry into classes, it is easier for the Progressives to demonize “the rich.” Once that is accomplished, the rationale is that “the rich” can afford to pay more in taxes. It becomes irrelevant that “the rich” are also “the productive” and “the job creators.” So, too, it becomes irrelevant that “the rich” are expected to pay a much greater percentage of their income so as to subsidize the class that is not productive; that contributes little to society.

I will say one thing as a comparison regarding the rich as being 'productive' and 'the job creators'. Yes they are both of these things..........HOWEVER............when owners of companies tell their employees that there will be no raise this year because of the bad economy....or that their employees must pay more in heath care because of the economy...makes one pause.

Would it be fair then for the 'prodcutive, job creating' folks to give themselves a raise without an increase to their health care?? And if so why?

We have a Progressive Tax system in the USA.  That's how it was set up and congress passed into law.
However, due to the 'special interest groups' (the rich) meddling and bribing their way into our legislators pockets, the present system is the OPPOSITE OF A PROGRESSIVE TAX SYSTEM.
THE RICH PAY THE LEAST, THE MIDDLE CLASS PAY THE MOST!

It's called 'Conservative Fairness'.

Of course Union exemptions from Obama care and Green Energy companies receiving BILLIONS isn't an example of special interest.  That is considered spreading the wealth to those who deserves it.  Corporatism at the direction of Democrats makes it no less corporatism.  Just hypocrisy.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Tbird.
The RICH are 13% of those who pay no tax.
Also many seniors on Medicare pay no tax... Grandma and Grandpa living on Social Security.
Some mentally or physically disabled Americans pay no tax.
Many unemployed, or those living on part time wages, don't earn enough to pay any tax.

Would you tax Grandma & Grandpa while you give the Rich a larger tax break?
Would you tax a totally disabled person?
Would you tax a man or woman trying to raise a family on a few thousand dollars a year?

One group has consistently over the last 30 years, paid less and less tax every year... THE RICH!

So, you are saying that half of the tax filers in our country are either disabled, retired, or working at MCdonalds?  C'mon!
You turn the same blind eye to tax inequity that you accuse the right wingers of doing on this site.

The ONLY fair way to tax individuals and families in this country is eliminate the income tax and go to a national sales tax. Exempt food, heat, and BASIC needs ( they are NOT cable tv or internet access) so the poor are not burdened. They'll be no exemptions and no tax law to hide behind.

Why did you omit the 13% of RICH in your question???
Aren't those who have the most money, and those who paying their taxes would hurt the least on your list of those who pay no tax.
Why aren't you curious about why the RICHEST AMERICANS PAY THE LEAST TAX?

I omitted it because I was responding to your poor excuse of why 47% don't pay any federal tax.
I am not curious why the rich pay the least percentage because I know the reason why, its politicians that are bought. I stated how to make it fair for everyone, but you go ahead and continue to ignore the ENTIRE issue because it supports your political beliefs.

In order to answer the question you have to know who's writing the tax codes, The Ways and Means Committee in the 111th Congress was chaired by Charlie Rangel, who had taken a leave of absence as chairman until House ethics violations were resolved.

~ People who make no income, pay no taxes.  That is just a fact of life.  If you have none, you can pay none.
~ People with little income pay little, but with the same tax deductions that we all get, their tax burden is less than their deductions, so they pay none.
~ People with huge deductions pay little of none, depending on their circumstances.  A rich man or poor man who's deductions exceed his tax, will pay none.
~ People who are rich and hide their wealth overseas or in tax write off investments, or have 'creative accountants',  pay little or none.

~ That leaves people like me, who take my income, subtract my deductions and pay my fair share.  If we all did that the USA would not be in this financial mess.

Do you own your own home? If so, renters can say with legitimacy that you and I don't pay our fair share because of the deductions of mortgage interest and real estate taxes... examples like that make the present system of deductions unfair to SOMEBODY, how ever you try to modify it. Abolish the income tax and institute a VAT with safeguards, its the only TRULY fair way.

I don't disagree with the VAT, but there are side effects that are not apparent when this system is proposed.  Usually the way to counter those 'side effects' is to add, what amounts to "loopholes'.... and your off down the same road we are presently on.

Those loopholes you mention, food, clothing, heat, etc can be done automatically right at the checkout counter the same way its done for tax free clothing periods and food stamps now. Use the IRS goons to enforce the VAT requirements for the major retailers. Corporate taxes will not be so easy to apply a VAT too. they may have to stay on the income tax, just reduce the exemptions to a minimum.
