Quick freezing leaves hope for salvage of historical trove
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
By Justin Mason (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

ROTTERDAM JUNCTION — Schenectady County Historical Society librarian Melissa Tacke wasn’t sure what she’d be able to salvage from the collection stored in Rotterdam historian Dick Whalen’s basement.
The house on Main Street in Rotterdam Junction remained submerged in floodwater for more than three days after Hurricane Irene struck, and many suspected Whalen’s trove of historical photos were a total loss. But Tacke remained confident she could save some parts of the collection, even if it meant keeping large volumes of it in a frozen state until a proper restoration effort could be attempted.
“I said we might be able to salvage some things,” she recalled recently....................>>>>..............>>>>.......................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/sep/20/0920quick-freezing/

Ron, this may save the materials. If you ever get them in your hands, don't leave them around for your aunt's dog to eat.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

I'd be more worried about his goat making a meal of them.

Apparently the simple-minded nattering nayboobs draw some amusement from making personal attacks on others.   Those of us who are more intelligent just keep smiling and ignore them.

The bottomline is that town's collection of historical records and artifacts are and always have been safe and sound in storage in town hall and the senior center.   Hopefully, the new administration which will take office on January 1, 2012 will set aside a space either in town hall or at the senior center - a space that is not in the basement or in a furnace room - where the town's collection of historical records and artifacts can not only be appropriately stored but that will allow for the public viewing of all or some of the collection.

The personal collection of the former town historian is now in the hands of the county historical society and steps are being taken to attempt to restore them.  The county historical society has the staff, space and access to the equipment needed to complete such a task successfully.

The issue is over and done with -- and I will not be commented on it any further either here or in any other venue.

Like i posted earlier.........it may be a blessing in disguise. Rotterdamians won't ever know how wonderful their little town was....they will just think that it was always a sh!thole.

I just wonder why it is that Mr. Mason didn't get ahold of our current town historian to get his POV on this for inclusion in the story.

DVR idea for Rotterdam Historical Record Site-first floor of Death Rays condos at the old ALCO. Since no one wants a condo in the City {because of the DEM taxes} you can store records over there. Acres of empty space where industrial jobs used to be.

Actually, I didn't care if either one answered. As far as the lost material and all the cost that will be brought about trying to save as much as possible, saying that this entire thing is the former historians fault is more akin to BDS (or as I previously named it PADS), since the current administration can do no wrong.  It's appearing more and more to me that they can do no right.  It's a good thing things are about to change.  Maybe we'll get someone into some of these offices that will actually do their jobs.  It's just too bad we won't see change in leadership at the county level.  I think that the Republican Party will do quite well, but I believe that at the County level, they will not win every seat up for election, and at this point, it would take at LEAST that to remove Ms. Dagostino from her post.
