It has been said that this was allowed to happen......to save downstate/city. Don't really know if that is true or not...........but there are some pretty angry folks out who do believe it to be true.

Quoted from GrahamBonnet
Why were the spillways lowered on the Mohawk in that window as well, allowing for greater capacity?

Think people, think.

Actually, I can tell you that the water was lowered in some areas prior to the storm.  I remember being down by Jumpin Jacks once and they had lowered the water a few feet prior to the storm.

Because Mr. Stratton FORGOT about the water rising and the water falling......

wasn't that his qualification for his appointment.....?

It's official: Stratton leaving for Cuomo admin

posted Feb 9, 2011

The Cuomo administration officially announced this morning that Schenectady mayor Brian Stratton has been tapped to head up the the New York State Canal Corporation.

The announcement came bundled with three other appointments -- the relevant portion of the release is after the jump.

____

ALBANY, NY (02/09/2011)(readMedia)-- Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the following appointments and nominations to senior positions within the state government.

...

Mayor Brian Stratton will be recommended as the Director of the New York State Canal Corporation. Currently, Mayor Stratton serves as the Mayor of the City of Schenectady. Prior to being elected Mayor in 2004, he was represented District 2 in the Schenectady County Legislature for two years. From 1992-2002, Mayor Stratton was a Schenectady City Council Member At-Large. In addition, he served as the Economic Development and Small Business Liaison to the New York State Senate Minority leader from 2000-2003. Prior to joining the Senate, Mayor Stratton worked at Empire State Development in the Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research for 13 years. After graduating college, Mayor Stratton began his career at General Electric in 1981. There he worked in Cable Television and Broadcasting Department in Schenectady, and later moved to the Corporate Government Relations Department in Washington D.C. Mayor Stratton has a B.A. from State University of New York at Oswego.

Michael Fleischer, Executive Director of the Thruway Authority said, "Mayor Stratton is an excellent choice to lead the Canal Corporation. He is a respected local official with a wide range of knowledge and contacts along the Canal Corridor, and will serve Governor Cuomo and the Canal Corporation well in maintaining and promoting this unique state asset as a source of tourism and economic development across Upstate."

Thomas X. Grasso, President of the Canal Society, said, "The choice of Mayor Stratton as Director of the Canal Corporation is an excellent one. He is a well-respected community leader and a strong supporter of New York's State's storied waterway. Therefore to have a man of his stature and leadership abilities in this role bodes well for the future of the canal and I am very confident he will robustly advance the goals and objectives of our magnificent canal system not only for the betterment of the canal system and the State but for the people of New York State as well."

Congressman Paul Tonko said, "I applaud the Governor's decision to recommend Mayor Brian Stratton as Executive Director of the New York State Canal Corporation. As resident and Mayor of a City that was shaped by the Erie Canal, Brian understands the history and tradition of the canal system and its immense impact on the state's economy and quality of life. Brian would be the ideal partner for my Mighty Waters task force to lead development and preservation efforts along the canal to spur economic development and showcase the rich heritage of our state's canal system."

ALBANY -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo has recommended Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton to be Director of the New York State Canal Corporation, the governor’s office announced Wednesday morning.

In that role, Stratton would oversee New York's system of inland waterways and bicycle paths.

But he would be forced to step down as mayor following seven years in office.

"I hope that what I can do to help serve the governor is going to help him support a statewide platform that will be good for our city, that will be good for all of the state," he said.

Stratton's new job requires approval by the Thruway Authority, which manages the Canal Corp.

Stratton said, if approved, he hopes to start sometime next month.

City Council President Gary McCarthy is next in the line of succession, though he would not have the title of mayor or the salary.

The Council could either leave him as a placeholder, or appoint someone else to fill the remainder of Stratton's term.

No I am not happy about Tragedy. One of my concerns about the place has been its lowlands atmosphere with the swamps and backwaters, and the ramshackle places that make up the area.

And I know because I heard this from a qualified source, Del Gallo was working a backhoe or a bulldozer down there (his own) donating his time. He didn't have the nice clothes on like some of the other politicians. I may not agree with him but print a list of the officials and what they wore and what they were doing and then knock FDG, Biags.

Some are there to lend the wrist to give a stroke job, and some are there to bend their backs.

What was A-jello doing? Sharing his Puttanesca recipe in his silk suit, or did he go casual with his Sansabelt slacks and Italian loafers? Did he have his peons handing out free cheese? I can't see him sweating in front of strangers without breaking into hives. Not his thing. Was Triple-dip Buffardi there with a shovel waging war on silt, or did he have his dogs there to sniff out stray mudpuppies that washed in with the river bottom? No overtime on that gig.

Tippy, what do you think they should do ?

given a rate of inflation of 1 million in 1913 is now 22 million 98 years later

and an estimated cost of 101 million to build in 1905 we are looking at 2.25 billion to replace

just for some very expensive pleasure boats  - some how i dont see the financial necessity

in the winter and spring the water management is open so dont give me a line about flood control - we just saw how that worked

business and people will adapt to the change to - they always do

Flood waters gone, gritty decisions to be made in Rotterdam Junction
Houses with most damage may be facing demolition

Tuesday, September 6, 2011
By Marcy Velte (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

ROTTERDAM JUNCTION — It is hard for Jonathan Gerardo to believe that the house he grew up in with his six siblings may have to be torn down after last week’s flood.

Friends and family worked all weekend to clean out the Main Street house owned by Gerardo’s father, Ben. More than six feet of water had filled the home and was there for about five days until fire officials from Mariaville were able to pump out the water on Saturday.

Practically everything in the house was thrown out onto the curb to be picked up by dump trucks provided by the county. An inch of mud coated the floors and outside steps. The first two floors were gutted to their frames, waiting to be sprayed to prevent mold.......................................>>>>......................................>>>>................................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/sep/06/0805_flood/

My point about DelGallo needing to be front and center didn't mean he should be driving his damn equipment around, he needs to be working on making sure this town gets what it needs to clean the mess up......work with government and state officials to guide them our way, he is the leader of our town. I appreciate is work ethic, but h needs to step up and be that leader !!!!!
