This is such a heartache for sure!! I can't even imagine. Is there anything that we can do to help?

Irene: Health, insurance concerns raise anxiety in Rotterdam Junction
Prospects dark for historic hamlet
Thursday, September 1, 2011
By Michael Lamendola (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

ROTTERDAM JUNCTION — Rotterdam Junction will never be the same following a devastating flood that swallowed most of the hamlet on Monday, residents and elected officials said.

Rising waters from the nearby Mohawk River reached depths of 7 to 8 feet on Main Street, forcing the evacuation of approximately 400 residents. On Wednesday, many returned to find homes damaged by flooding, the interiors stinking of mud, river water and debris.

At least six homes have been declared unfit for habitation with another 80 having problems and may not be salvageable, according to Deputy Supervisor Bob Godlewski.

Many residents do not have flood insurance, and as such will have to pay for repairs out of pocket or not at all, according to local officials. Some may be eligible for help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which was taking applications at the Rotterdam Junction Fire Department on Wednesday. Schenectady County has set up a walk-in assistance center at the fire house........................................>>>>..................................>>>>................................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/sep/01/0901_junction/

Bush's fault.

The Bushies on this board are so used to making excuses for their Failed President, that when ever anything happens, the knee-jerk reaction is to scream...
"IT'S NOT BUSH'S FAULT"
Of course we all know that much of the countries problems ARE Bush's fault.

The answer to Georgies "Miss me yet" question is a resounding NO... 51% of Americans still blame George Worst Bush for the Economy.

Tea Party racists did it.

This is information that I copied from a board at the Rotterdam Junction Fire Department tonight.  I know that some of it may be out of date, as I believe there was a garbage pick-up today, so check with the fire department on these items.

Clean-up kits and food donation are available in the back back, see Bill Young.

If you need a shower, call 887-5070 and speak to Sally Cotton

4 phones are available for use in the hall.

Dry ice and ice are available in the freezer, you will need to supply your own cooler.

Please place all non-hazardous trash at the curb in front of your property.

For Bulk trash, please call 355-6615

Ton Wagner has a portable generator to loan. Call 424-8574 for more information.

Art Klein has a dehumidifier.  Please contact him for pickup (I am not comfortable giving his address on here for obvious security reasons.  Please contact RJVFD for contact information).

Contact Victor Fazio for large amounts of garbage - Vic's Roll-off - 528-7390

Also, Jefferson Elementary is a drop-off location for any donations you would like to make.  It was amazing looking there to see all the clothes that have already been donated, but they will be gone through rather quickly.  I believe donations are being accepted there between the hours of 9 AM and 8 PM.

How sad.

Now I hear that there are 5 locks that were damaged. If not repaired before spring, what will happen during the spring thaw?

if they are open  - nothing

as that is the state they are in from nov 1(ish) to may 15(ish)

the damaged locks affect commerece, water skiing, and how the river looks in the summer

the whole lock thing to me is a money pit a holdover from the 1800's before railroads

I have wondered why the infallible bureaucrats at the state did not draw the Schoharie reservoir down several feet in the week or so before we knew this event was coming? Why were the spillways lowered on the Mohawk in that window as well, allowing for greater capacity? No one in the press will ask that because it might embarrass the state Canal Corp and the NY Water Authority or any other politician upriver with his hand on the lever- especially the Governor and his administration of the Canal Corp...(Who runs that?)... But they are the culprits, just as when the Hudson River - Black River Regulating District is the culprit when the Hudson floods because not enough draw down. However this is worse b/c this is was a forecasted storm vs. a spring ice melt event that could not as easily been gauged.

Think people, think.
