WASHINGTON -- President Obama might need to start taking a few more campaign trips to New York -- and not just to raise cash.
A stunning new survey gives the president a negative approval rating in the Empire State for the first time, with just 45 percent approval and 49 percent disapproval among voters, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.
That's a sharp turnaround from June, when Obama's New York popularity was a healthy 57-38.
In the 2008 presidential election, Obama carried New York with 63 percent of the vote.
The poll of 1,640 registered voters was conducted from Aug. 3-8, just after Congress approved the hard-fought debt legislation and before this week's market mayhem on Wall Street.
But according to Quinnipiac, Obama in his re-election bid next year would still take 49 percent of the vote in New York state versus a generic GOP challenger's 34 percent.
"The debt-ceiling hullabaloo devastated Obama's numbers even in true-blue New York," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
The bad New York polling news came as Obama jetted into town last night for his latest big-bucks fund-raiser -- a party for 50 guests at the home of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein on Bank Street in the West Village.
A new McClatchy-Marist Poll finds 59% of Americans still don't blame President Obama for the nation's current economic conditions and 61% think he inherited them.
It will always be Bush's fault. Don't worry, the president will cruise back in and no one can stop him. All good democraps just need to stay home, Americans know that it always the republicans to blame!
I don't know anything about perry yet. All I know is that he had some kind of prayer rally. There are 15 months left, so we'll all have plenty of time to vet them all.

But Americans should remeber al of that when they make there decisions in the next elections. Every Rep/Dem/TeaPartier that played with our economy and our future during the debt ceiling debate should be voted out. And if any American feels Obama is to blame, they should vote him out....but if the other choises against Obama do not offer a better future, then be careful! Like with Bush, we knew what we had and it was better than what we might have had....we know what we have with Obama, so we better be sure what we can have is better before we vote him out. Frankly, many of the so called cnadidates to date do not offer much hope for our future. Much of it is retread political bull. It should be an interesting time come election!

I blame Bush 100% for the economy, the Tax Cut for the Rich and the two unfinished wars... I blame Obama for what he's done about those problems during his presidency. and I blame much of Congress and especially the TeaBaggers for the obstructionism that keeps any progress from happening.

Obama could have let the Bush tax cuts expire... he didn't and addition to that, he reduced the payroll tax and the SS tax that makes our revenue and debt problem even worse. We could have left Iraq entirely and pretty much the same for Afghanistan. As long as Pakistan plays both sides, the Taliban survives even if we stay 30 years. The Dems had complete control of the gov't for 2 years and didn't solve much.. the Tea party has been an issue for barely 8 months. There are only 17 affiliated tea party members in the house. I am still saying the reason this economy is struggling and will continue to struggle for years is the gov'ts attempt at a soft landing. They bought bad debt instead of letting it die. The immediate situation would have been worse, but the recovery would have more robust.

Well, if he wants to be Reganesque, he better hope the unemployment rate falls... fast. Reagans was down to 8.0% by December 83 and at 7.4% by May '84. IMHO, Obama needs to be AT LEAST at 8.0% by May or he better hire the movers.

At least by doing that, he will be doing something to help the unemployment rate, although that would be short term. Do you think he'll stay in town if he doesn't get re-elected? Maybe working over on K Street as a lobbyist, or do you think he'll run for the House or Senate again next time the chance comes up? He doesn't really know any other way of holding down a job.

Way too early to predict a one term... Reagan looked cooked and Bush I looked unbeatable at the same points in their presidencies and look how they turned out...
If Obama were to lose, I'd bet he'd do the Bill Clinton thing. Lots of speaking engagements. It doesn't matter how successful you are as Prez, as long as you were one...exception, Richard Nixon. Jimmy Carter was a disaster and he did fairly well after leaving office.
Obviously it is the economy and the free market that drives this nation. This present administration has pi$$ed off every bank, corporation and business owner in the county. (not the welfare folks though...they'd still vote for him) But this administration has pi$$ed off the machine that will bring this economy back and put folks back to work.
So unless this administration does a 360......don't expect too much to change. Obama is in a no win situation. If he goes along with the progressives.....the country won't bounce back. If he goes along with the con's, his party will drop him like a hot potato!
But there is 15 months to go. So anything can happen.
