Cutting their property tax bill in half while their competitors pay full value isn't success.  It's government propping up one business at the expense of surrounding businesses in the same industry.

If Recovery was a brand new roller skating rink paying half the taxes you pay, AND you lost 20-30-40 percent of your customer base, you would be singing a different tune.

Exactly right. I hope the existing tappies do well. The ones that aren't a chain that in typical Schenectady County stylin had to receive a governmental hand out. Nobody cares until their ox is gored.

It is a slow season for sports ---  probably a good time to schedule a few fundraisers there.

I thought Mallozzi was the home of the Dem fundraisers?  Must be since they had to begin paying their sewer bill, the free hall and spread for Democon fundraisers are over.  Now BBL needs to return some favors for the 50% tax break.

This is how they brainwash the existing businesses by leading them to believe that 'if the new business succeeds, so will theirs'. Did the new ice cream place on Hamburg street in rotterdam get any tax breaks????? Should they?

Why there?  Why not at places that have been loyal and established in Rotterdam for long periods....why some "chain" that only came here because it cost them little and if they walk away in a year it's no big loss.  How about a fund raiser that patrionizes the local loyal establishments....can you make that happen?

They are paying $13 per 1000 assessed.  Is that what their competitors are paying?

Actually -- our party has held 5 fundraisers so far this year -- 2 of them at Mallozzi's -- great place and ...
we Democrats have always PAID for the food (and the use of the hall is included in that cost) and the service.

We have never gotten a "free spread" from anyone nor do we expect it.

“And yet our opponents tell us not to interfere with abortion. They tell us not to impose our morality on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth. Yet no one calls it imposing morality to prohibit the taking of life after a child is born. We’re told about a woman’s right to control her own body. But doesn’t the unborn child have a higher right, and that is to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” – Ronald Reagan

We have had our fundraisers at various places in the town -- I had mine at Canali's ... we have had fundraisers at   Dunzy's,  Mark's,  Newest Lunch, Top's,  Sons of Italy Hall  and those are just the places that I can quickly remember off the top of my head.  We do our best to spread our business all around the town.

In fact, 2 of the 5 fundraisers held in 2011 were held at Mallozzi's.

It would be absolutely acceptable to have a fundraiser at The Recovery Room  .. and I will do my best to make it happen there .. just like I made 2 of the 5 fundraisers we already had this year happen.

I applaud anyone who attempts to start a business in this failed economy and hope they succeed. However, using taxpayer's money to construct a business AND giving them huge tax breaks, forcing the residents to shoulder the tax burden is not the solution.
It would be interesting to see exactly what the owners of the old capital plaza were paying in taxes as compared to the now RECOVERY.
