Jack Shiely does not have 500 members.  They are lucky if they can get 80 -100 people show up at their meetings anymore.  That old regime who was the spark has now died--the rest are too disinterested.  People like bonitatibus, Quirini, Battaglia, Fusco.  They used to give the association some spark.  Fusco doesn't go their much anymore--NOBODY goes to senior centers anymore.  Sure the outrage will be now but by November they will not remember.  DM will become the Town Clerk.  John DeGeorgio will still try to make a comeback as Johnny Fontane--Gerard Parisi will become the Pizza Nazi--refusing to sell a slice of pizza to Ritano and Mertz and Tomassone will be like the "street toughs" from Seinfeld refusing to take off their flag pins to wear the AIDS ribbon.  Oy vey where is Uncle Leo when you need him.

Right, the center does not speak for the entire population of seniors anymore. At this stage, no one will remember in two months.

Another crack in the facade of working together and DEM invincibility. The end is near-so grab all you can with both hands. Another opportunity may not come your way.

The exact same crap is going on in Nisky. Follow the example of the fleeing Mayor. Get while the getting's good then abandon ship.

Ms. Marco isn't going anywhere  -- she has done a good job in the past year  and I support her 1000%.

“And yet our opponents tell us not to interfere with abortion. They tell us not to impose our morality on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth. Yet no one calls it imposing morality to prohibit the taking of life after a child is born. We’re told about a woman’s right to control her own body. But doesn’t the unborn child have a higher right, and that is to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” – Ronald Reagan

Do you mean to tell us that it is okay to be insubordianate to your direct supervisor, refer to him or her in a derogotory manner, become hostile and exhibit behavior unbecoming a public official, undermine, cheat, lie and deceive.  Misconduct and malfeasance doesn't matter all because the majority of the board thinks your doing a fine job of doing these misdeeds to the person elected by the people for the people?  I don't get it?  I'd be ashamed to air the dirty laundry that always comes out in a lawsuit.  For 15k a year????

Who would want that crap on a resume?  Who would want that crap on the opposition's literature?  Who would want that crap in the newspapers and on TV?  Geez maybe I'll call the boss an a-hole and then sue him for making me call him an A-hole because the people around him don't like him???  Yup that will get you real far in this world.  I DONT THINK SO!!

Rasputin-nobody would want that crap anywhere except on this board.  I agree with Yossi.  Jack Shiely is over-stating the power of the silver-sneakers.  No one in this town is ready and able to step up to the needs of Rotterdam's seniors.  And it is also true that those who were the real life-force in that Association have died and the others just too tired.

It's easy to put a trip together to get away from the stresses around you but no one including Jack Shiely is ready to walk into the middle of an aging population whose healthcare seems to
change at a moments notice whose pensions cannot meet the rising costs a round them, those who are alone and although can drive a car are not firm enough to climb a ladder to change a light bulb.  Nobody is wiling to go into the homes of the frail elderly in Rotterdam who feel isolated and can use a visit or a meal.  The winds of aging have shifted in Rotterdam and NO ONE in authority gives a rats a$$.  And as for the Boomers...they ain't joining the senior center.

Senior Centers were created in all municipalities to service the 'active' seniors. Seniors who wanted a place to go to play pool, play cards, go on day trips, exercise, play bingo, be social........etc....

It was never intended to address the 'shut-ins' or 'disabled' or 'inactive'. There are already provisions made for that at the county level. From the Office of the Aging, The Eddy, Senior daycare, to Meals On Wheels. There are also churches and other non profits that are involved in senior care. And lets not leave out 'family and friends'.

I don't believe that community senior centers are 'credited' to go beyond the realm of social activities. I would believe that lawsuits could be filed for the most well intentioned actions.

However, there are those who have a 'self need' to be 'needed' by SOMETHING...SOMEONE....ANYONE!! Some that need a 'cause' for 'self elevation'. Again.....lawsuits could be filed for the most well intentioned actions.

Aside for that.....boomer is correct....the baby boomers will not be attending senior centers in the too near future, if at all!

As far as DM, and putting politics aside....it doesn't really matter if she is at the senior center or not. It just is one more example of how rotterdam politicizes EVERYTHING!!!! How politics define the person and not character, ability or qualifications.

Honestly......I can't believe this was even newsworthy!!

it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.

You are absolutely WRONG BT.  Any senior center worth their weight does all of the above.  And Rotterdam DID do it several years ago.  Colonie, Bethlehem, Albany all have social workers on hand to attend to the needs of the frail elderly and now Albany's NNORC has replaced and supplemented many of those programs that were held in senior centers.  I cannot stress enough HOW wrong your post is re: seniors.  I am not saying that as a criticism for your post indicates what many people have thought.  A center for people to hang out.  Those who are well make out no matter where they are.  Senior centers are closing left and right.  Money for congregate meals is being diminished and money for meals-on-wheels has not had a significant increase.  Theother non-profits have to collaborate with eachother or there will be NO money.  Churches and synagogues have few programs for seniors.  Remember the new seniors aren't interested in playing games--all of that had its purpose before.  Now the newly retired either want a part time job or want to volunteer their time in a meaningful way.  Even RSVP had their money eliminated in the cuts.  Serious stuff coming down the pike.  And nobody does this work for self-aggrandizement.  It's ministry.

You don't think dumping DM is noteworthy?   When people get fired or replaced unjustly it is noteworthy especially when it is political.  You should know all about that BT with the crap you and ST pulled a few years ago.
