SCHENECTADY
Purse-snatcher gets 12-year sentence

BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter

Rotterdam resident Marjorie Byrnes said she has lived in the Schenectady area all her life and has always felt safe.
That was, until March 16, 2010, when Omar White stole her purse in a Rotterdam supermarket parking lot. White got the purse only after Byrnes put up a struggle.
“I now find myself looking over my shoulder, and I am leery of anyone who approaches me,” Byrnes, 61, told the judge. “Omar White stole much more than money from me. He stole my peace of mind.”
White, 25, formerly of Congress Street in Schenectady, appeared before Schenectady County Court Judge Karen Drago on Friday to be sentenced on one count of seconddegree robbery.
White pleaded guilty to the charge earlier in the face of a 37-count indictment. In exchange for the plea, White accepted a sentence of between 10 and 12 years.
Drago had the discretion to sentence White to as little as 10 years and as much as 12. White probably didn’t help his cause by lashing out verbally at the judge, using an expletive. Drago ultimately sentenced him to 12 years.
“People in this community, lawabiding citizens, work their whole lives to legitimately amass not only their identity, but their reputation and their peace of mind,” Drago told White, “and you’ve got the audacity to go into a public parking lot and accost her.
“Sir, that is beyond brazen and that speaks volumes to this court to the lengths you will go to perpetrate violence in this community.” ...................>>>>...................>>>>...............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01000&AppName=1

I agree.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Quite often this type of crime goes unsolved...I am happy for the victim that she could see this thru to the sentencing.  It must have been a he!! of a year for her to wait and see how this would unfold.

I dont usually stick up for criminals....... but do anyone here not agree to a 10 - 12 year sentence for petty larceny?

It upon its self I dont care that much about this particular situation, but going down this mentality what if the politicians  increase driving without insurance coverage to 6 months in jail?

The punishment should fit the crime and 10 years for taking someones purse just is way way way too long.  Give him a few months behind bars sure and like 6 months community service, so he does something useful in his life rather then come out 10 years from out with hatred for the world.

SCHENECTADY -- An agitated felon about to be sentenced for robbing an elderly woman in a supermarket parking lot last year cursed at a judge after challenging her contention that he hit one of his victims over the head with a hammer and also has four felony convictions in North Carolina.

"You're full of (expletive), man" Omar White, 25, said Friday to Schenectady County Judge Karen Drago during the proceeding. Moments before his verbal outburst, he had looked away from her in a what appeared to be a protest.

Drago threatened to hold the city man in contempt of court. After talking with his attorney, Brian Mercy, about the consequences of his behavior, White apologized to the judge, and calmed down a little.

"I apologize for the situation, I really am sorry, and I wish I could take it back," he said.

He had earlier issued an identical apology to Marjorie Byrnes of Schenectady for snatching her purse in the parking lot of the Rotterdam Price Chopper supermarket during a violent struggle on March 16.

Three days earlier, he had pulled off another robbery on Chrisler Avenue in Schenectady, authorities said.

They go on Miranda in suits, but it becomes clear there's oxygen. They find one source of power on the planet and follow it. They find a giant city. Totally silent and dead. And all over are dead bodies. No one died in pain, of any wounds. They're sitting in chairs, in vehicles. It's as if everyone just stopped living. River freaks out and starts seeing things. They reach the energy source. It's a recorded hologram message, which they play. It's a scientist for the alliance, who is giving a report. They tried to make the populace calmer and weed out aggression by adding a substance to the air. It worked. Everyone got so passive they just laid down and let themselves die. She goes on to say that it had the opposite effect on 1/10 of the population, and their aggression went out of control. Everyone realizes the alliance created reavers, and the scientist in the hologram is killed by a reaver.

Statistics say he won't be useful, but just cost us more in prison costs when he goes back for a repeat offense.
Let him do the time...ALL OF IT

A violent and dangerous man. He didn't steal from an unattended car or something.
