but why would you give up $90K to work for less?

JM is not giving up his full time position in Guilderland...he will be in the Rotterdam office evenings and Saturdays.

I hear thats why JM was hired.  The whole board was very impressed with his interview, knowledge of the town and vast experience.  His resume was quite impressive by Rotterdam standards I am toldl.

Honestly, it doesn't take much to impress rotterdam's town board. So that is a moot point.

However, I'm sure it does meet Rotterdam's standards. And that's not saying too much either.

IMHO of course.

Apparently all it took to impress the GOP run Town Board about the last Assessor was that he was willing
to give GOP cronies reductions in their assessments.

There is no such thing as an "independent candidate".   Just admit that you want your friends in office.

Steve Tommasone and Joe Signore LOST when they had someone other than JM as the Town Assessor.  And both of these former supervisors peddled their influence through Craig Surprise and John MacIsaac.  They are both lucky they weren't indicted.  IMHO!!!!

The assessor is really a moot point for the property owner.  If you have a valid complaint, you could go to the assessor for possible relief.  More importantly you have the right and chance to have your case reviewed by the BAR, and even go to Small Claims Court.  Bottom line is that it is the property owner's responsibility to make sure his taxes are in line with his neighbors because they are the ones with the vested interest.  The assessor is merely an additional layer you may or may not pass through. You are correct, the assessor is just one more layer in government to ignore the taxpayer and force them to go to court and have a judge give them relief.

November 16, 2010 Town Board meeting
The Board approved a 14 percent pay raise for Town Assessor John Macejka. Councilman Grimm was the lone dissenting vote indicating it was unfair to give the assessor a raise when all other town employees were being asked to accept a pay freeze for 2011.

http://www.markgrimm.com/Guilderland_News.asp

Wow, he must be good.  Guilderland gave him a 14% raise when the rest of the town employees get a pay freeze AND he lands the assessors job in Rotterdam.  If I were a Guilderland resident, I would be looking at the friends and family club that are the recipients of generously reduced assessments that would compel the board to grant a 14% pay increase. IMO
