SCHENECTADY
4 local relief agencies get $5K awards
Foundation funds help growing need

BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter

Four local human service agencies, facing an increase in demand for assistance and a decrease in contributions, have received an unexpected fi nancial boost from the Schenectady Foundation.
The foundation gave $5,000 each to the Bethesda House, City Mission of Schenectady, Northeast Parent & Child Society and the Salvation Army, all located in the city of Schenectady.
“These are reliable organizations that are delivering important services. We are attempting to respond to a need,” said Robert Carreau, the foundation’s executive director.
Carreau said the foundation made the awards after surveying several Schenectady nonprofits about their holiday programs and the recession’s affect on them. “With the economy the way it has been, we got a sense from a number of organizations we have a relationship with that there appears to be a heightened need for these types of services,” he said. “We hope we are able to fill the gap with these grants.”
Carreau said City Mission has seen a 10 percent increase in people seeking services; the Salvation Army served almost 15,000 more meals this year over last year; Northeast Parent & Child Society expects to serve 200 more children than last year with its Holiday Hope Fund; and Bethesda House anticipates a sharp increase this year in individuals needing hygiene items, sleeping bags and warm clothing.
“This is serious stuff. People are hurting. There are people who do not have enough food or enough clothing. Supporting the basic needs of the most vulnerable people in our community, especially during the cold winter months, is integral to our mission,” Carreau said. ....................>>>>......................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00901&AppName=1

It's all part of the miracle we call Schenectady.  Take a bow Susan Savage and Brian Stratton.

Things are really turning around under the DEM "leadership"-from bad to horrible. I thought Mayor SOS wanted nonprofits to kick into City coffers who's finances he's totally depleted?-lol. The Foundation should cut out the middle man and forward the money directly to the fiscal incompetents in City Hall.

NE Parent and Child again? Maybe they should sell their palatial Franklin Street HQ that forced taxpaying private sector businesses to flee. Franklin Street used to be a Doctor's Row-in Gillengrad they've been replaced with nonprofit mooches.

Join The Stockade Society!
Support an Endowment for Schenectady's Future

The Stockade Society was created to recognize those who have made a commitment to The Schenectady Foundation through their estate or a planned gift. Stockade Society members understand that their gift to TSF helps grow an endowment exclusively for serving the people of Schenectady County.

Contributions through wills and trusts, and the return generated from their investment, have virtually been TSF's sole source of funding. Today, the Foundation is able to make more than $1 million per year in grants and scholarships only because of the foresight and generosity of our past donors, who have never before been recognized during their lifetimes. The Stockade Society allows the Foundation to gratefully acknowledge supporters and their gifts, and to build on that support over time.

Everyone can make a difference
Regardless of the size of your estate, as a member of The Stockade Society you will make a difference to Schenectady. Over time, your gift will grow, yielding income each year that will go back to the community as grants to support critical programs and services, to help change lives, to touch those most in need.

By pooling the gifts of our generous Stockade Society members, TSF is able – year after year -- to make substantial grants to the organizations and institutions that help strengthen our children, our families and communities.

TSF is Schenectady's Foundation. Please consider becoming part of the Stockade Society, and help us sustain our essential work.

For more information, please contact Robert Carreau, TSF Executive Director at racarreau@schenectadyfoundation.org or (51 393-9500.

First -  Most of the building that houses Northeast Parent and Child was empty BEFORE the plans were made to
renovate it and move that agency in.

So there is NO truth to the venom-filled hate post that attacked the good name of this agency.

Second -  It is interesting how the EXTREME MILITANT AUTHORITARIAN RIGHT-WING is upset about a
PRIVATE foundation giving monetary awards privately run non-profits that HELP people in the community.
Apparently, the EXTREME MILITANT AUTHORITARIAN RIGHT-WING is opposed to private sector solutions for
community problems and is opposed to helping the poor and less fortunate.   Maybe they need to be visited
by the Ghosts of Christmas past, Christmas present and Christmas yet to come.    They need to be reminded
what Christian values really mean.

But doesn’t the unborn child have a higher right, and that is to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” – Ronald Reagan

"Good name"? Was that before or after the Brandywine School Fire? They just received another Metrograft handout for "job training".

I believe that foundations that give to non-profits without using taxpayer money is commendable. But I believe the point being is that with all of these non-profits (and there are tons in schenectady county) is just a snap shot and a dose of reality of what condition the county is in!

The more non-profits a municipality has, means the more people on government assistance....which equates to less taxes going in to the maintenance and support of that municipality.....coupled with businesses that were raised and relocated at the taxpayer's expense and the continuing tax exemption for these businesses........results in shifting the heavy tax burden to the hard working, tax paying residence.

The bottom line is......In schenectady county, it is the ever declining middle class workers that are supporting multi-million dollar businesses and the low life drug addicts and drug dealers. And if anyone doesn't believe that......then you don't get out much!

People already know that the liberal socialists call this a 'venom filled hate post'.........when in reality it is just the plain hard FACTS!

I'm shocked at the increase in these disturbing numbers, and the reality of Schenectady, just after the "Micacle called Schenectady" campaign ad.  I believed that ad you know.   With all those jobs Susan created, you would think that there would be LESS people seeking these services not MORE.

Working together works to make MORE people POOR.

More residents in dire straights totally contradicts the DEM blarney that things are improving and man made miracles. The only things up are the rent, unemployment, property taxes, DSS caseloads and crime rates.

There's a huge difference between Salvation Army/City Mission which are both excellent God centered charities and the other two. If a private charity wants to give them more money fine-but don't keep dumping public money into these 2 bottomless pits. The City dumped $5 MILLION into Bethesda House last year to move it into Vale, where the neighbors did not want them. No amount is enough and they are constantly shilling for more from the oppressed taxpayers.

The increase in demand for social services and assistance is a direct result of 8 years of GOP economic
policy at the federal level.   Once again,  the Democrats at ALL levels have to clean up the "poop" left
by another failed Republican administration.

And are they cleaning it up by exempting millionaires from paying taxes and making the financially struggling people pay?????

Gee, when Bush left office the federal debt was a whopping $500 billion.

Two years after Obama and a dem house and a dem senate, the handouts to buy houses, the handouts to buy cars, the handouts to buy expensive appliances, let's see, unemployment is way way up, the elderly on SS fixed incomes are not getting a raise for the second year, and as the news reported today - the two years of uncontrolled spending by the dems, our fed debt is now heading toward $14 TRILLION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These two years under a dem pres, dem congress and dem senate, the debt has increased beyond anyone's wildest imagination.

Gee.....and look how much better off everyone is?

The dollar keeps losing it's value...hence....gas prices go up!!! Expect an almost 20% increase in heating oil this year.
Great, huh?

Republicans cause the problems and the Democrats have to clean up the mess.   This has been going
on for decades now.

I hear that within the next couple of years, the government will buy ALL the gold. They want to control the gold since it is the plumb line for the ever shrinking dollar. THEY want to control the gold and the price of it!
