No time for new taxes, or services

The city of Schenectady is planning to impose yet another tax, in the name of a $60-a-year increase in water fees, so that unlucky homeowners would no longer have to pay to fix lateral water and sewer pipes that connect people’s houses to city mains. What is essentially an insurance plan is not an awful idea, but it’s probably going to be viewed as an unnecessary and unaffordable burden by many homeowners, who are already paying some of the nation’s highest property taxes. The city would best leave things as they are regarding this issue.
That means homeowners should continue to bear the burden for this costly repair, just as they do for most other aspects of home ownership. The city doesn’t fix your furnace if it fails, or your roof if it springs a leak; fixing the laterals shouldn’t be treated any differently.
For one thing, the city has no real idea how many jobs it would get stuck with. It says 130 to 150 permits are issued for the repair every year (less than one for every 100 properties), but to save money some plumbers probably do the work without getting a permit. And some home owners probably delay repairs if their leak is slow enough. ........................>>>>....................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01102&AppName=1

Just keep raising taxes and fees and never ever consider cutting spending and don't forget to give all those downtown businesses tax free pilots while screwing the taxpayer to the wall.

This is the most round-about idiocy I've read. Who wrote this Gary McCarthy?! Even if taxpayers pay $60 more for water, the City will do NOTHING in return!!

Taxpayers pay for police? Yeah, that's working great!

Taxpayers pay for Metroplex? Right, all those tax-free businesses are lining my pocket?!

Taxpayers pay for City schools? Always ranking low academically?

Now you want water money??? Please just stick the needle in my vein, draw all the blood from my bankrupt, over-taxed carcass. Will you be happy then......

Another fee? WTF! What are the highest property taxes in the Nation going for? To relocate Bethesda House to Vale where no one wanted them, on more security cameras no one mans and to increase Mayor SOS' travel fund so he can pick up more awards for creatively screwing the taxpayers.

Stick a fork in this pathetic Mayor he's done. Get 4 more ready for the City Council rubber stamps. Re-elect no one 2011.

What is needed is for people to get after the local news papers to print a few big front page stories about the use of tax money.   And these things like fact finders on tv news.

This stuff needs to be exposed.   And it needs to be explained to people in various ways so they can understand the implications.   For example, the relationship of less money for city services while the money goes to tax exemptions is important.  And investigative reporting by looking at IRS and state tax records in terms of profit made by these people/businesses downtown needs to be made into an easy to understand story.

But, I'll bet that DV will report such suggestions to "the team" who will in turn do something to prevent the news media from telling the truth

“And yet our opponents tell us not to interfere with abortion. They tell us not to impose our morality on those who wish to allow or participate in the taking of the life of infants before birth. Yet no one calls it imposing morality to prohibit the taking of life after a child is born. We’re told about a woman’s right to control her own body. But doesn’t the unborn child have a higher right, and that is to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” – Ronald Reagan

It is exposed but only in the Times Union and CBS-6. Unless there is a long overdue shakeup at the Gazetto-don't expect any change from the "All is well"-"Mayor for life" crapola.

Taxes aren't too low-spending is too high. Unless we get a new Mayor that get's it nothing will improve.

No wonder people are abandoning their homes and just leaving. How do you attract people to want to come and live in Schenectady when you tax them into bankruptcy.

The working together team has worked it's magic. Well, they didn't vote it down-but they didn't approve it either. This has got to be the most stunad tin eared group in the State. Instead of cutting services they keep wasting time adding services and costs. Taxes aren't too low-spending is too high.

Now they have hired a debt collector to hound residents that owe $12 MILLION in back taxes. You can't sell-you flee the jurisdiction-the DEM fiscal incompetents now want you to pay all back taxes due. They expect over $3 MILLION to balance the City budget-lol. After 7 years of Mayor SOS-35 years of DEM control of the City Council we are in worse shape than ever-borrowing to balance a total joke City budget.

What shocks me is that they ACTUALLY proposed this!!!!!!!!

This only adds to the long long list of failures that have come out of the liberal socialist machine. It should be an easy transition this election year.

Just keep an eye on that alliance party. The more you look into it, the more it appears that the only alliance.... is with the liberal socialists. Everyone....do your homework!!

Re-elect working together DEM stooges? Maybe in their 18th term they will budget? A collection of old time pieces that were public sector failures-OR-take a chance on the Alliance Party hoping that they clean out City Hall. Hopefully, another option will emerge.

Apparently, there is no fee charged if you just have an outhouse for "you know what" and a bucket for
bathing.
