SCHENECTADY -- The state Education Department has identified Schenectady High School as a "persistently dangerous" school for the third year in a row.

It is among 16 schools statewide receiving the classification under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

"If our efforts to increase student achievement are to have a true and sustainable impact, safe and supportive learning environments for each of our students are an absolutely essential first step," state Education Commissioner David M. Steiner said in a statement issued Friday.

Schenectady High is one of four schools located outside New York City on the list. The remaining 12 schools are all in New York City.

Another honor for the "award winning" district. Now Schenectady is linked with Berkshire School, a reform school, that is one of the four Upstate failures.

Maybe more school taxes and increasing the bloated budget of over $161 million budget will turn things around?

If you are a good liberal you would have to believe that because your child is good looking, cleancut, smart and happy, he will be perfectly safe because all of that diversity is wonderful and people are inherently good.

Schenectady High still won't take a zero-tolerance approach for bullying?! Three years on this list and
the State won't take the reigns? What are they waiting for?

Columbine should have been enough of an example to get the State involved in the Schenectady
School System years ago!

As a 1980 graduate of Mont Pleasant High School, I am sick and tired of mud being thrown at the City of Schenectady School District.   It has produced many fine graduates in the past  and it still does  ..  YES, it has its problems and issues .. but the majority of the teachers, administrators, staff, and students are wonderful, dedicated people ... trying hard .. and suceeding.

Yet, they lack a "safe and supportive learning environment".  You graduated around the time I did - times have changed, and not for the good.

Public government policies will not cure the ills of the schenectady school district. Why? Because it is the government that created this problem.

These power hungry, tax spending nut jobs 'invited' the undesirables from down state to reside here. Offering them the best welfare programs in the state!!!!! Hell, I still hear welfare recipients talking on their cell phones to their down state friends and families, telling them to move up here cause the welfare is GREAT!! And that is the TRUTH!!!

Schenectady became the laughing stock. Schenectady has been renamed 'little NYC'! There was so much drug trafficking that people use to say.....SHUT DOWN THE THRUWAY!!!

And that's what todays dems do. They dumb down the electorate, feed them, house them and victimize them to ensure votes!!! PATHETIC!

I wonder why half of the high school seniors fail to graduate. Anyone can be dedicated, but if the
kids are not successful, what's the point.

Congratulations on your graduation, what do you say to the 400+ kids that didn't in 2010?

I am speaking for the half that did graduate -- they don't deserve to be badmouthed.

A lot of the problem with low graduation rates .. has to do with the parents (or lack of parents) .. ..
schools can't solve all of society's problems.

But what the hell....2 blocks of state street look good, if ya don't mind people pissing on the sidewalk, and phillip morris is enjoying a cushey salary and kosiur has his $80+created patronage job!!!

Not all Democrats are "liberal socialists" .. certainly not me.

As for the City School District ...  I was only standing up for the many good people - students, faculty/administration, and alumni - who are sick and tired of Schenectady schools being beat up on.

The fact is that even our suburban schools have problems -- but those schools and the press find a way to sweep those stories under the rug.   I taught for about 8 years in the 1980's --- my favorite school to teach in was a  so-called troubled inner city school ...  yes, it had problems .. but 95% of the young folks were really working hard to succeed.     I taught in a rural school district and a private school - and in both those cases .. the community, the administrators, and the press were oblivious to the major problems that those schools had.    On paper the kids graduated .. but some couldn't even read the diploma.   On paper the school was safe .. but the administrations refused to report and/or deal with drug problems and violence.

So bottomline ...  I will stand up for the good folks who are working hard to succeed in the Schenectady School System.

You are missing the point!!! The liberal socialist dems have created this problem!! You can cheerlead all you want for the 'few' good ones. But the bottom line is that the Schenectady school district is a result of the governing of the city and with our elaborate welfare hand outs!!!

The liberal socialist dems accomplished what they set out to do. They now have a dumbed down illiterate electorate!!! And there is NOTHING the school can do about it!!

More than a "few good ones" -- I think closer to 95%.

Secondly, i don't think you can blame the decline of the American family and other social ills on the current government of the City of Schenectady.

But you can blame it on the lack of effort and foresight in the city government and the speed of the decline that is increasing during the Stratton Administration.
