ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A battle is quietly brewing that challenges the future of New York's Conservative Party and the ballot line it has held for nearly a half-century.
Republican upstart for governor Carl Paladino, who was rejected by GOP and Conservative leaders, has petitioned his way into a Republican primary Sept. 14, and also created a Taxpayers ballot line for the November general election.
That is aimed at attracting tea party activists, a new movement of voters angry at politics as usual by the major parties, which will compete with the Conservative line.
Republican Rick Lazio is the Republican designee and Conservative nominee. But Paladino is gaining in the polls and the Buffalo millionaire has access to far more cash than Lazio has been able to collect, making Paladino less of a long shot.
