Somehow, Schenectady Republican leaders always seem to discover a new way to make the party function like a contraption instead of a political machine.
In recent years, it was a disgrace when the GOP failed to come up with any City Council candidates to oppose Democrats, owners of all seven council seats. They couldn't even find people to run against the Dems in several county Legislature races.
While the Republican leaders have an established lousy track record for recruiting legislative candidates, this year their ineptness spills into the judiciary.
A Schenectady County Family Court judgeship will be decided in the fall election. Democrats get a free ride for this judgeship because the GOP failed to field a candidate.
That's bad enough, but the Republicans still managed to deliver an even newer all-time low. The GOP, at least what's left of it, endorsed Mike Horan for City Court judge. However, the party headed by brand new city Chairwoman Darlene Lee, failed to obtain enough petition signatures to get Horan on the ballot.
This boneheaded performance means the Democrats will be running unopposed in both the Family and City Court elections.
There aren't many true Republican workers left in Schenectady, but some privately say county Chairman Tom Buchanan should resign. One activist e-mailed, saying Buchanan is worse than predecessor Armando Tebano. That's a mouthful.
Nobody knows who she is other than wife of Hamilton Hill DEM Fred Lee. Now they can't field Countywide candidates. Schenectady County looks more like the Bronx everyday. But the Bronx still has a two party system.
It is never an easy job to be county chairman. You are always going to make "someone" unhappy if you are going to make tough decisions. The job is a thankless one and the idea of failing to field new candidates can be looked at through a different pair of glasses. WHERE are the people who are willing to stand up to these dems? Who has the guts and the resources to take it on? If no one steps up to the plate, how can the chair be blamed at fault???
