at the county level axe the auto tax - i know you cant do it at the town level
those with cash will find their way to schenectady county
those with cash to spend love their cars and are always looking to pay less in tax - just ask Frank Del Gallo
those with cash like to surround themselves with nice things - just ask Frank Del Gallo
thus no need for the plex or ida - those are for the under served
change the demographic - its cheaper!

Thank you for the information -- the Highway Department is still a huge part of town spending and thus of our tax bill.
Through intergovernmental cooperation - you could save money - by eliminating duplication of positions .. particularly the supervisory ones. For a county the size of Schenectady - 150,000 persons .. and the 2nd smallest in land area ... we really don't need 7 highway departments, 6 police departments, 7 chief executives (Mayor/Supervisor) 7 clerks, 7 receivers of taxes, etc (oops .. I didn't count the villages of Delanson and Scotia .. add 2 to some of the previous numbers).
i hear the highway dept will get cheaper but the general fund will take a hit before january 1, 2011 and i'm not talking about a CSEA employee retiring, I am talking about a second CSEA employee in the dept retiring and DM's "BF" will be left out in the cold |

You are saying that development has no benefit for our town? If so, you are misguided.
I do believe that we can expand the tax base through new development AND cut spending AND lower taxes.
Your party's idea of expanding development is by using taxpayer money to 'falsely' produce it. It is NOT true economic developing. It is clearly government extortion. Do you call moving Marcella's from crane st to broadway, WITH TAXPAYER'S MONEY, economic development? Do you call moving villa italia from one end of the county to another, WITH TAXPAYER'S MONEY, economic development? Do you call moving MVP to state street, with Gary Hughes at the hub, and WITH TAXPAYER'S MONEY, economic development? Do you call Bow Tie Cinema and economic development when there is barely 10 patrons there at each showing. AND PAID FOR WITH TAXPAYER'S DOLLAR?? Do you call giving Proctors taxpayer's money to stay afloat, when it can NOT sustain itself, economic growth? I mean really! How many people are employed by proctors? What is proctors payroll? Cut spending??? And all the while this false security of economic development is going on, the taxes are out of the roof!!! No DVR..........it is YOU that is clearly misguided! IMHO |

Yes - they are all economic development - Marcellas probably would have moved out of Schenectady County altogether .. keeping them in the city is a big win for the County. Villa Italia was thwarted by the previous administration from relocating WITHIN Rotterdam .. so the fact that we were able to keep them in the County instead of losing them to a neighboring county is also a big win for the County. MVP brings hundreds of jobs to our downtown -- workers who spend money during their lunch time and after work -- another big win for the County. I always see good numbers of people going in and out of BowTie Cinema -- it attracts people down town .. they spend money down town .. another big win for the County. Proctor's is a jewel -- a nationally known venue -- it attracts people downtown -- they spend money in Schenectady County -- it is a HUGE WIN for the County So if I am misguided by thinking that keeping businesses WITHIN the County -- attracting NEW business into the County -- and putting Schenectady County on the national map as an Arts/Entertainment venue -- than I am guilty as charged. At least, I am not one of the ostriches who keep their head in the sand (or someplace else) and wants NO development and then cries when their taxes go up. |

Not what I recall! I attended a T.B. meeting where John Mertz was extremely P.O.ed that this was happening and he was tring to introduce a Resolution in the Town where you cannot "poach" a business by offering Metroplex monies to relocate. |

Everybody is supposed to see and believe the successful "economic development" in Schenectady County over the past 10 years of Metroplex. Yet those successful businesses like Marcella's and Villa Italia threaten to flea to more economically sound Counties until they receive e some of that "incentive" money to get them to stay. A logical person would pose this question to themselves. "If Schenectady County is showing economic growth like politician claim, WHY would two household name businesses with proven successful track records like Marcella's and Villa Italia threaten to leave unless they received millions of dollars in taxpayer "incentive" to stay? Obviously their balance sheets told them a different story about Schenectady than the politicians are selling to the residents. |
| The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And even if he is not romantic personally he is apt to spread discontent among those who are. ~ H.L. Mencken |

You are remmbering what happened publicly .. months AFTER their effort to relocate within town was rebuffed by the then governing administration. Metroplex did NOT poach .. it stepped in .. AFTER the then administration put up a road block to VI's expanding/relocating in another spot in Rotterdam. Schenectady County would have lost VI .. if Metroplex had NOT stepped in when they did. |

No proof of that, they still had Mallozi's and the Belvedere in Rotterdam, and the whole family lives here! |

So again the taxpayers 'sealed a deal'. And Avon is correct....there is no proof that VI would have moved out of rotterdam OR the county. And it appears that the metroplex made this a political matter by even getting involved in the first place with the taxpayer's money!!
I certainly appears that existing businesses know a good thing when they see one. Hell, if they are looking for a taxpayer handout, all they have to do is cry foul and say they are going to move out and the plex will be right there to dole out the taxpayer's money.
As far as new businesses....well there are none knocking down the doors to schenectady county. They are lured in with TAXPAYER'S money and lucrative tax incentives. Like I said.....a false sense of economic security! IMHO |
