Lewis DWI case results in sergeant’s month suspension

    Police Sgt. Matthew Hoy has been suspended without pay for 30 days in connection with mistakes made in arresting Officer John Lewis in January.
    It’s not clear why the city waited so long to suspend Hoy, but Corporation Counsel L. John Van Norden said Hoy’s actions had been under discussion for some time.
    He was the sergeant on duty when Lewis was charged with DWI on Jan. 22, city officials said. That night, police responded to a 911 call in the Ellis Hospital parking lot. The caller said Lewis had crashed into a car. Police have since accused him of driving drunk.
    But City Council members said officers allowed Lewis to drive himself home from the scene, rather than arresting him at once.
    The incident occurred just one month after two rookies drove Lewis home in another alleged DWI incident. Lewis was acquitted in that case, partly because police did not perform sobriety and Breathalyzer tests and turned off their mic while talking with him. Other officers went to his house hours later and said they found him drunk.
