Poor Little Ben
Marv Cermak

Going back a few years, Schenectady finally completed a prolonged downtown reconstruction that kept State Street in the general Proctors block vicinity torn-up seemingly forever.

About $22 million in mainly state funding was spent to replace underground infrastructure, narrowing and repaving streets and putting up a super structure to hide the ugly railroad bridge over the city's main drag. Downtown was in disarray for several years.

Anyway, one of the lesser components of the project was a $26,000 street clock. While that sounded a little pricey, the Little Ben is a handsome streetscape addition. It was custom built by a 167-old Cincinnati clock company.

Unfortunately, the clock face is no longer lighted at night and the hands are stuck at 10 minutes after 10. Apparently city officials aren't at all concerned because it's been inoperable for about two weeks.

Oh, well, at least the clock time is correct twice a day.

Time stopped for Schenectady a generation ago......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
