Mohanasen teachers are planning to give the district’s Board of Education a bit of food for thought. Members of the district teachers’ union plan to bring nearly 2,000 non-perishable food items to the board’s meeting today to demonstrate the number of hours in a week they work outside of their contractual obligations. The food represents the extra hours the roughly 300 members of the union worked in a week, and will be subsequently donated to the Northeast Regional Food Bank, union President Susan Nelson said. The union’s contract expired in June 2008, and they’re in the midst of negotiating a new one with the district. Nelson said the administration is asking the teachers to add time to the elementary school week, a concession they don’t feel is necessary given the time they already expend. Nelson said the teachers spent about 1,954 hours extra at the district during the first week of March. She equated this time to about 260 school days. Union members agreed they wanted to demonstrate this point while adding a positive spin. Nelson said teachers will help make a point with the district and fill a need with the food bank at the same time. “We’re trying to keep things positive,” she said, “And [the food bank is] delighted because their stores are really low at this time of year.” Superintendent Kathleen Spring lauded the effort by the teachers, though she didn’t necessarily link it to the contract talks.
