City gets $32K for DWI, seat belt enforcement

    Motorists be warned: You’re being watched in Schenectady’s school zones.
    Schenectady’s City Council accepted two police grants worth more than $32,000 that will be used for seat belt law and drunk-driving enforcement. City officials said the funding will be used to augment enforcement efforts in school zones.
    “So there will be extra traffic enforcement in these areas,” explained Councilman Mark Blanchfield during the council’s meeting Monday.
    The city will receive $20,000 through Schenectady County’s STOP-DWI traffic safety grant program this year. About $9,000 of the funding will go toward offi cer training, $7,000 for equipment purchases or maintenance and $4,000 for police overtime, according to the resolution.
    Police Commissioner Wayne Bennett said the department will use some of the funding to analyze data from police stops over the past year. Areas where there are high numbers of DWI arrests will likely see a stepped up police presence.
    “We’ll analyze our data for the last year and we’ll target our enforcement,” he said.
    The other funding comes via a Buckle Up New York grant provided through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The $12,900 grant will go toward funding police overtime.
