State Police cracking down on wayward Thruway motorists

By CATHY WOODRUFF, Staff writer
Thursday, August 21, 2008

ALBANY -- State Police on the Thruway are planning a campaign to catch drivers breaking the law next week.

From Monday through Friday, members of State Police Troop T dedicated solely to conducting speed and aggressive driving enforcement will be in action along the Thruway.

``Troop T will be out in full force patrolling the highway, as well as watching for intoxicated drivers, speeders and conducting seat belt checks,'' said State Police Troop T Major Robert C. Meyers. ``The warmer weather brings more motorists out onto the roads and ensuring everyone's safety is Troop T's number one priority.''

The campaign is called Operation Summer Brake.

``As the summer travel season comes to a close, the authority reminds motorists to drive responsibly and to remain alert and aware of their surroundings," said Thruway Authority Executive Director Michael R. Fleischer.

Um, what were they doing otherwise?

Troop "T" is exclusively on the Thruway - I'm not sure how this is "news" - unless they weren't enforcing the laws before?

One of the things the T-Way sliced to trim its budget was the SP patrols.  Each patrol car now has to patrol a much larger section of the road each way. Then, anytime there's an accident or other incident, that car is taken off of patrol, leaving huge caps in coverage.

I don't understand. Are you saying that there were 'more' patrol cars before they trimmed the budget? If so, where did they go? If their job was to patrol, what do they do now?

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil,

Most got transferred out to other Troops, mainly in the Western part of the State, or the items were eliminated from attrition (retirement, promotion, etc).  As an example, in the Albany area (which ranges form Kingston to Canajoharie), the T-Way cut back 2 patrols cars per shift (6 per day), plus the additional weekend shifts for higher volume periods.  The I-84 detail (which the T-Way pays for), was reduced to 2 cars per shift, covering all of I-84 in NYS.

It's also why the State DOT "Help truck" is allowed to cruise the T-way now.

So, let me understand this ... expenses went down dramatically - yet tolls went UP?

No, it's a shell game by the T-way.  They cut jobs where they're needed, such as SP and Maintainance, and then turn around and hire $70K/yr darftsmen to produce plans, or more secretaries for the desk jockies, or spend $500K for new flowers at Hindquarters, or by paying for more things like the maintainance of I-84, I-287, Cross Westchester, bailing out the City of Buffalo when it snows, etc.  So instead of investing in areas where they make a difference, such as facilities, equipment, and "front line" employees, then shuffle off cash to clerical positions in the offices, or to EZ-Pass (which the T-way gets about $0.40 per dollar collected, in theory this will "go away" once the T-Way takes full control of EZ Pass), or to pay off some agencies and communities.

Or for paying for the extra "board members" who got added over the years.  the T-Way Executive board is so bloated right now, and we end up with guys like Fleischer who had zero experience with a toll road prior to taking over as executive director.

Sounds like how healthcare and NYS government are run, to me......make more rules and damn papers to fill out for nothing and pretty much those making the rules and regulations dont have to work too hard,,,,but they get to collect.....way to many chiefs for nothing----AGAIN......I wonder if all states are
run like this?
