Price Chopper to close Conn. store
May 20, 2008
by Alan Wechsler, Business writer

Golub Corp., the Rotterdam-based owner of Price Chopper, has one supermarket too many.

Its store in Waterbury, Conn., will close June 9, according to the Republican American in Waterbury.

The 70,000-square-foot supermarket opened in May 2003, the newspaper reported.

“That location has not proven to be a successful one for us,” Price Chopper spokeswoman Mona Golub told the paper.

The store is located across the street from the Naugatuck Valley Shopping Center, where a Super Stop & Shop opened in 2001 and a Wal-Mart outlet opened in 2002. The store is also less than a mile north of a Shop Rite supermarket, the paper reported.

Price Chopper has 115 stores in six states. The company has no plans to close any of its other locations, Golub said.
