The Gazette today ( May 8 ) on page B1 of their print edition reported the following story:

The Glenville police officer who used a potato gun to shoot out a parking lot light behind the police station has pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor criminal charges and resigned his position. Christopher Charnews, 35, pleaded guilty in Niskayuna Town Court on Wednesday as part of an agreement with prosecutors. Charnews caused an estimated $630 worth of damage to the light behind the Glenridge Road police headquarters last August. He also lighted two boxes of road flares in the police parking lot last February. The flares cost $130 total. Charnews had initially faced a felony count of criminal mischief and two misdemeanor counts, but they were reduced to misdemeanors. Judge Paul S. Zonderman said Charnews must pay restitution for the damage and stay out of trouble for six months. Charnews said after his plea, “I’m just moving on with my wife and kids.”

GLENVILLE — The charges against Glenville police officer Christopher Charnews were adjourned in contemplation of dismissal Wednesday in Glenville town court. Charnews was accused of using a potato gun to shoot out a street light behind the Glenville Police Station last August. The three misdemeanor criminal mischief charges against Christopher Charnews were adjourned in contemplation of dismissal on the condition that he is on good behavior for six months. He resigned his position on the force and must pay restitution.
This isnt a simple mistake, this is gross neglegence. And it's not just once, this is a COMMON occurance with this rag. They're behaving/reporting no better than those gossip magazines you find at the checkout stand in the supermarkets.
That headline will stick with Charnews for a VERY long time -- the damage is done and no minor correcion buried in the next print edition will clear his name, yet the Gazette can't be held liable. This is ridiculous.
My subscription to the Gazette was cancelled LONG ago - I've got no use for their style of reporting and no tolerance for their lack of fact checking. People need to wake up and NOT believe everything you read - especially if it's printed in the "hometown rag"

The unemployment rate came in at 4.4 percent, which is a 0.7-point improvement from March but up from 3.7 percent from April 2006.

In April 2007, the region grew by only 1,400 jobs, according to Labor Department Market Analyst James Ross.
Why can't they report the news, and leave out their political spin on stories.
For instance:
Good news, the unemployement rate in the capital region came in .7 points BETTER than March. More jobs are being created, more people are working. IN April 2007, the region grew by 1400 jobs. April 2008 still resulted in a net improvement / gain of 1300 jobs!
The liberal, slanted, inaccurate reporting by the Gazette is really getting awful - and most of us don't even realize it.

I am at the ready to take my bashing but here goes.......When Kathleen Moore was the reporter for Duanesburg she did a fantastic job and I was upset when she moved on to the Schenectady beat. I still enjoy her stories on happenings in Schenectady and know that what I read is the truth as told to her. Then came her replacement, Justin Mason, I was scared to death wondering how he will spin his stories or what angle he will come from. I have to tell you from experience that he too has done a great job. I don't always like how I'm quoted, but I should not have said it. I have called a couple of times to question what they quoted me as saying and after a jog of my memory with their notes I would have to admit that I did say what they quoted me as saying. I can not recall a single story that was twisted or written to appeal to any agenda. The opportunity was always there but never taken. Justin has been through a couple of big issues of reporting for us and I applaud his writing ability and style.......even if I don't always like what I say!!!!
I must say that I haven't dealt with Kathleen Moore, however, I have spoke to Justin Mason on occassion and I believe that he has reported things exactly as I have said. Again, I may not have liked how he has published some things, but after reading it once or twice, what was written was what was said. No qualms about his reporting here.
And don't ya love the headlines for this article....they use 'football coach' instead of 'union business agent' accused of assault. So what drew them to that conclusion when they were desiding what the headline would be for this particular article?

Not only did the Gazette NOT report the SCCC Graduation at Proctors on Saturday May 17, either in Sunday's paper OR Monday's paper .. they reported the RPI Graduation instead on Sunday May 18.
The "Hometown Newspaper" is gone from their masthead - I guess they really mean it. So much for the college right in their community - where kids and their families are reading the paper, supportinig the merchants advertising in it, etc. - Or are they?
Maybe, like Brian Stratton, the Gazette needs to be reminded that Washington Avenue IS in the City of Schenectady.
What a slap in the face to the kids at SCCC who worked very hard to earn their degrees and now enter into our local workforce. Graduates, I'm sorry that the local newspaper shunned your graduation ceremony - the residents here actually DO care about you - and wish you well as you enter the next stage of your adult lives. Congratulations!

I am also surprised since the Gazette and the city's democratic dictatorship and SCCC are all intertwined. It appears that the Gazette reports as the dictatorship dictates. I hardly believe this to be an oversight. And where was Mr. Philip Morris's promotion of the graduation? He clearly has no problem letting the public know about a new Broadway show. What about his own hometown community college's graduation?
Could there still be some unresolved issues regarding the move of the music department fiasco?
