Where is the information on how high Schenectady's taxes are?  Here you go.

http://www.empirecenter.org/CMS/Documents/DataBank/PropertyTaxBurdens.xls

Now, you can download this, and I sorted by Tax as a percentage of value.  Schenectady County falls in at #10.

Notice out of the top 10 properties by tax % of value, we have the highest straight up tax and the second highest tax as a percentage of the people's income.

And by the way, these ranks are NATIONWIDE, not just New York State.

Source: Tax Foundation, based on Census data.  Tax Foundation Note: The figures in this table are for property taxes paid by households on owner-occupied housing. As a result, they exclude property taxes paid by businesses, renters, and others. All data come from the 2005 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau. This table includes all 775 counties in the United States (excluding Puerto Rico) with populations greater than 65,000. There are 3,077 total counties in the United States. Also included are some incorporated cities that belong to no county, but have populations greater than 65,000, most of which are in Virginia. “Median Property Taxes Paid on Homes” is the median real estate tax paid on owner-occupied housing units for that county. The home value statistic used is the median value of owner-occupied housing units for that county. The income statistic used is the median household income for those households that are owner-occupied housing units.

Bargy has a college degree and more than five years experience working in youth development; he took a civil service test to become county youth bureau director.

Bargy's current salary is $55,941

A well qualified individual (Bargy) with an advanced degree and considerable experience in the field of youth development who was hired after taking and passing a civil service test and who was earning in the mid $50K /year range plus benefits has been reassigned to an administrative position in which he "has no prior experience in this field and is expected to learn the job on the go" and for which he will receive a salary increase of $6K /year  By all accounts, Mr. Bargy performed admirably in his (former) civil service-protected position of director of the Youth Bureau.

The taxpayers will finance the creation of a new patronage position for Mr. Kosiur at a starting salary of $80K /year (a 43% increase over Mr. Bargy's current salary) plus benefits.  The position requires neither a civil service test nor a college degree.  It was not posted for qualified county employees to apply.

Longtime friend Legislator Gary Hughes, D-Schenectady, said Kosiur is “going to be excellent” for the job. “Ed will bring a different perspective to this. He has a broad view of what is possible and has some clear direction from the Legislature.”

Suhrada said Democrats “thought they could give him a consolation prize, but it is a booby prize for the taxpayers.”

Hughes said even if Democrats “did what critics are suggesting, are the youths of this county not well served by Ed’s appointment? Give him a year and let’s see what he does in a year.”

How many of you have been hired based on your potential rather than your education and experience and offered a starting salary of $80K / year + benefits?

The fleecing of Schenectady County residents continues ...

This is the most pathetic thing I have ever heard! The dems have finally reached an all time low. They are by far the most self-serving, marxist, socialist dictatorship that I have ever seen! They continue to raise taxes to a national high level, they govern a city that has 60% of it's residents on public assistance. And yet they create a position for the failing politician Eddy Kosiur! And at $80,000/yr!!! What a slap in the face for the people of Schenectady County!! They are slowly bleeding us to death!! Where is the outrage??

Bumblethru, Please show me to where you got t  60% SCHENECTADY residents are on public assistance. If you are going to post statements with that then you better back it up when someone calls you on it!!!

Hey mr.clean, lighten up here! We clearly are not talking about counter terrorism or perhaps world war III here. We are discussing 'percentages' here. I was informed the percentage was 60%. Can't tell ya who/what my source is, cause then I'd have to kill ya!

Seriously, I was told 60%, if this is incorrect, than please correct me.

I did not ask who your resourse is I asked you where is this statistic document!

I am having a hard time finding this fact other that 56% of schenectady population are tennants, 44% homeowners,
But before I release this I need to look further and make sure it's acurate and when it is I will attach this document,
I then asked you because I thought you had a document. And as far as the war you are in it and against the ones that want a change!  and as I see it it rotterdam VS schenectady in your writting then you say different! Instead of working together, Goodday to you Bumble, it's just not worth my energy on something you can't show!

Kosiur job a boondoggle

The creation of an $80,000-a-year job for former Democratic legislator Ed Kosiur may not result in a noticeable tax hike, but make no mistake: It is an affront to all Schenectady County taxpayers, not just the Republicans who have been squawking mightily since the appointment was rumored weeks ago. Indeed, it is part of a devil-may-care attitude toward patronage hiring that Democratic leaders have adopted in recent years — one that has contributed to the county’s increasingly heavy tax burden.
The latest political plum, r awarded to failed Assembly candidate Kosiur, was formally announced Tuesday. To make room for the county’s first-ever assistant to the commissioner of social services for youth development, Democrats eliminated a civil service job — Youth Bureau director — that paid $56,000 a year. But they didn’t dump Shane Bargy, the old Youth Bureau chief who was Civil Servicequalified and doing a good job; they made him director of something he has no background in — temporary assistance and employment services. And they gave him a $6,000 raise to boot. Say what?
Kosiur does have some experience with youth services. He was director of an afterschool program for the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Schenectady, and as a county legislator two years ago helped start a summer jobs program that some allege is a patronage-mill-in-training. Thus he may have some qualifications for his new job. But no one should be fooled into thinking he won it through any sort of competition, and he has no college degree and minimal administrative experience.
So how likely is it he’ll be able to accomplish more by himself than what Bargy and an assistant (whose job was also eliminated) accomplished together? While it will be interesting to see just how well he does deliver, it probably won’t be very easy to judge since Democrats will be loathe to admit it if they made a mistake. They’ll probably just create another new position under Kosiur to help him out.
In the meantime, it was difficult to miss the coincidence in Friday’s story about cuts in service at four county library branches. Doing so will save $90,000, just slightly more than Kosiur’s new salary.

Kosiur’s hiring was blatantly political

Re Jan. 3 article, “Kosiur has new job with county”: Political patronage is alive and well in Schenectady County. Creating a new job for the defeated Ed Kosiur, while forcing the Schenectady County Library to decrease hours, is ludicrous.
He might better remain at the Boys and Girls Club, serving the youth of Schenectady, thus channeling his salary to the restoration of library hours to serve the youth of Schenectady.

Kosiur hiring says it all about county politics

As a new resident of Schenectady County, in an attempt to learn how things work here, I have become an avid reader of The Daily Gazette.
I was quite intrigued by the Jan. 3 story about former Schenectady County Legislator Ed Kosiur’s new job. Because I have both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree and over 30 years’ experience working with youths, can I, too, get a ticket to ride on the same gravy train?

You can hitch a ride on the gravy train only if you're in good favor with the Dems in control of the council and also no education in the field is necessary if you are in good standing.
