It's true that compost can smell pretty bad as the people living on Burdeck St will attest to but this smell is localized near the sewage treatment plant and Cambell Ave. Once you drive by the treatment plant the smell disappears and you're driving right at the compost facility. I drive by there all the time to go to the mall and BJ's and it smells just like when my septic tank is being pumped. If compost is handled properly it will smell very earthy but it needs to be turned constantly to keep it cooking and eliminate the smell. Remember to take care of both the compost facility and the sewage treatment plant the town will need to raise some money which they don't have so someone had better go hunting for some grant money. |

Maybe Mr. McNulty could get us some federal funding. For calendar year 2006 (through the 3rd quarter), Mr. McNulty got $1,010,161 for Rotterdam and teh Section 8 Housing. http://www.fedspending.org/faa.....&record_num=f500This is out of $8,151,412,601 that Mr. McNulty got across his district... EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS IN THREE QUARTERS and Rotterdam gets a measly $1,010,161 THAT WILL GO TO HELP LOWER THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE TOWN. Now, I am only saying that because of the type of people that are supposedly the ones that are usually on Section 8 housing. I don't know any, but anyone that has ever heard about Section 8 housing can probably side with me that these are the low income people, possibly coming right out of the City of Schenectady. $1,010,161 / $8,151,412,601 = 0.01239%. http://www.fedspending.org/faa.....e=faads&detail=0Here's money for Schenectady - 3 Grants New York 21 (Michael R. McNulty) $8,938,706 - Schenectady housing authority New York 21 (Michael R. McNulty) $8,862,986 - Schenectady County Community College New York 21 (Michael R. McNulty) $2,368,914 - Schenectady Community Action Program (Head Start) For a grand total of $20,170,606, almost a quarter of a percent of all his federal money... (0.24745% of his total) Seems maybe we're getting enough ... from him, maybe we can get some money to make his ... not stink??? |

Now that's what I'm talking about...MORE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIZED PROGRAMS! And I'm not talking about seniors or the people that really and truely are in dire straits. I'm talking about the people that make their career on collecting Welfare or any other government hand out. And then they pass on that wisdom to their children who also grow up making their career of receiving handouts as opposed to hand out. And it clearly is a career. They know how to work the system. And remember folks, if we did away with all of these 'hand out programs', there would be less on the public section job roll. And that is one way to cut spending! |

Bumble, if Schdy ever tried to cut spending to those people who make a career off government hand outs the scream would be so loud we wouldn't be able to stand it. Some group would sue the city for cutting these programs and it would be against their constitutional rights to have to go to work. They tried to put people on welfare to work once and look how that turned out. |

There are more jobs available (thanks to metroplex) for the so called 'under educated' and 'unskilled'. There are plenty of jobs in those two blocks of State Street. There are resturants, bars, hotel, theater and yes even proctors. So I'm sure there are people out there who can wash dishes, serve food, usher at a theater, change sheets, sweep floors...the list is endless. But if truth be known, these people can actually make more money ON public assistance than off. Wow, hasn't the government really done a great job?!? |

There's no incentive to work when you'll make much more on welfare than working at an entry level job. It's time to stop giving away tax payer money for doing nothing, if the people want to draw a welfare check they should be given a job to do as well to cut down the cost of the city supporting them. |

I absolutely agree. Welfare was created to help people 'get by' in the short term. Clearly not the long term. Okay so here's a thought. Rotterdam needs some cleaning up, correct? Then let's go down to the welfare dept. and summons some of those folks who are currently collecting their monthly hand out checks and put them to work right here in Rotterdam. There is clearly outside work to be done. Perhaps filing at one of the town offices. How about cleaning the senior center? They would not be 'employed' by Rotterdam per say. They would be working here and collecting their welfare check at the same time. Then they wouldn't be home sitting on their asses doing nothing. And if they have children in need of day care, then perhaps they have friends that are also home sitting on their a** that can watch these kids while the parent works. And it shouldn't stop in Rotterdam. God only knows that the city can use some hands on help. Get some out there to paint over the grafitti. And this could be applied to the surrounding towns as well. Let's start a 'back to work' program for the slugs. They have a program similar for the disabled. And if the disabled can and WANT to work, perhaps the slugs should be doing the same. |

THIS aspect of infrastructure can't be (but regularly is) ignored. If the Town wants to build sewers anywhere they've got to be sensitive to the capacity of the treatment facility. There are subdivisions being built with dry sewers for decades now that have never been connected to anything. Pipe lays cost what they cost and are RELATIVELY inexpensive to building new treatment plant capacity. That is multi-million dollar territory.
One thing that always concerns me when the Town approves new residential building is they look at current available capacity and say there's plenty...go ahead and build. The problem is they keep looking at the same unused capacity as they approve project after project. I reccmmend everyone read a copy of the "current" Town of Rotterdam Comprehensive Plan and looking at the section that talks about treatment facility capacity. It was alarming when it was written. How do you think it stacks up now? |

The sewage treatment facility is at max capacity already, just ask anyone who drives by during peak use how bad the area smells of sewage. |

I believe they know the sewage treatment facility is maxed out. That was one of the arguements used by those who were not in favor of the proposed Wal-Mart supercenter. So I don't think this is a big revelation. In fact I thnk that Wal-Mart was going to enlarge the facility if they got passage to develop. |

Perhaps the Heldeburg Medows developers will be required to pay toward the facilities expansion. If they thought Walmart was going to be a draw on the facility, what did they think all of these new mult-family developments and single housing developments would do? And let us not forget there is a water problem UNDER the newly proposed Wal-greens too. |

Nothing was mentioned about Helderberg Meadows paying for a sewage treatment plant expansion when their project was approved by the Planning Board or the Town Board. |
