I didn't originally see this, but I saw the opinion piece today, and after seeing it, I agree, but at the same time, the fact that this person actually wrote in to the paper to say something about how bad it was only gives it more credence.

They are located on South College Street.......and the Union dorms not too far......a city is just a big playground with a bunch of usually ugly big buildings all squashed together with some of those midget trees.......artsy-fartsy only gets ya so far,,,,,

Clinton’s Ditch not being a good neighbor

Clinton’s Ditch is a bar popular with a young crowd. It was helped by Metroplex loans and grants and surely, hard work by its owner, Tim Trier.
But, there are problems. Despite his success, I wonder how Mr. Trier can sleep at night. He probably doesn’t live near his outdoor bar where noise keeps neighbors awake and has negatively impacted nearby residential properties. He’s chopped down mature trees that offered buffering and demolished the historic 1800s firehouse between the bar and the Stockade Historic District. He claims it was collapsing, but it appears he just wanted more parking — even though the VanDyck, Amtrak and city lots are all close by. He promised to rebuild an exact replica of the firehouse, but that now appears unlikely, since Clinton’s Ditch is for sale for more than $1 million.
The last straw was his recent vulgar ad campaign for a Hawaiian-themed “Lei Party” (July 19 Gazette). Mr. Trier’s ad urged bar patrons to “Do whatever it takes to acquire the most leis.” Promoting casual sex and alcohol is a combination that can lead to deadly accidents and bad decisions. It’s an insulting and demeaning way to treat young adults — they deserve better.
To be a good neighbor, Mr. Trier needs to control the noise, fulfill his promise to rebuild the firehouse, show respect and moderation to the young adults that contribute to his success. Then maybe we can all get a good night’s sleep.

Nothing wrong with Clinton’s Ditch ad

In defense of the [July 19] Clinton’s Ditch ad for the [country singer] Kenny Chesney tickets, I found it neither “appalling” nor “disgusting” [July 24 Gazette].
It was actually a promotion offered by a beer company and WGNA country radio. Patrons received Hawaiian leis at the door. The person wearing the most leis at the end of the contest won tickets to SPAC.
I don’t believe this was meant to offend anyone — just good fun.

A city is what a city is.....unless you live up high off the streets, you will be bothered.....either move to suburbia or run to the hills......the city is hustle bustle, offensive, interesting, noise, smells etc etc.....

Clinton’s Ditch owner and Metroplex should both sleep well
MICHAEL CRANE Scotia

In response to the Gloria Kishton’s remarks about Clinton’s Ditch in her Aug. 1 letter, I would like to offer the following comments. Metroplex, in a desire to improve an otherwise depressed area of Schenectady, allowed Mr. [business owner Tim] Trier to renovate and subsequently revitalize South College Street. The building, and the surrounding area had, for the last decade, been nothing but an eyesore and a painful reminder of days past.
Tim Trier took a vacant, run-down building and transformed it into a tavern that attracts clientele from all around the Capital Region. Yes, some trees were removed and the firehouse was taken down, but it is irresponsible for people to become outraged that a new structure was not erected the next day. Trier replaced the wooded area behind the tavern with a patio to better serve the needs of his guests and make Clinton’s Ditch a place of interest. His decisions, deemed irresponsible by some, have done nothing but to attract people to the downtown area and improve commerce for the surrounding businesses. What one has to ask themselves is: Isn’t this exactly what Mr. Trier and the Metroplex had in mind when planning Clinton’s Ditch? Isn’t Clinton’s Ditch exactly the type of business that a town on the mend like Schenectady needs?
To the subject of the [July 19] “leis” advertisement, those who allowed themselves to assume the worst of both Clinton’s Ditch and its patrons committed the only inappropriate actions here. Those in attendance that night witnessed an innocent contest that men, women and children participated in.
Does Tim Trier sleep well at night? I honestly couldn’t say — but he should. He, like so many other hard-working men and women here, took a chance on Schenectady and as a result, we have an establishment worthy of praise and not the “assumptions” of people like Gloria Kishton. Tim Trier should be applauded for his willingness to take a risk and the vision he showed in revitalizing an otherwise forgotten corner of Schenectady.

I'm surely no prude by any stretch of the immagination, yet I believe that the owners of Clinton's Ditch could have choosen a different way to advertise this event. The name 'Kenny Chesney' would have been enough of a draw without the slant.

This was an advertisment for a BAR, not a daycare center.  This ad was geared toward a certain demographic.  I don't think Marie Delegge, or Gloria Kishton are part of that demographic.  For the gazette to put an editorial in the paper this many times over such a silly matter, makes me wonder what the Gazette considers news.  Is this really a news worthy story?  A more interesting story would be, how much money Mr. Trier recieved from Metroplex, along with many other small business owners in downtown Schenectady.  And maybe they could track their party affiliation.  I would also like to know who got denied metroplex money and why.  An advertisment with a play on the word "leid" is a waste of space in the newspaper.

Perhaps not a daycare, but then geared toward what demographic? The article from the gazette, below, clearly states it was an innocent contest where men, women AND children participated. So I guess some find it acceptable for mom and dad to bring their children down to Clinton's Ditch to get Leid.

If there were children there, unattended by an adult, then there is a problem.  If someone read that advertisment and thought that it was fun for the whole family, I would have to question the judgement of the parents bringing their kids there. Not the content of the advertisment.  Not only was the event from 8 to 10pm, I believe the advertisment also was promoting $2.00 coors light beer, and a contest to win concert tickets.  Not 2 to 4pm, offering free cake and soda, to win Sesame Street on ice tickets.  I don't think the advertisment could have been anymore clear that it was an adult theme party.

It was the sex offenders bringing their dates......maybe that is what brought on the hysteria????

And if some parents/guardians did bring kids what was wrong with them, was Kenny Chesney so important that they couldn't get a babysitter and 'JUST HAD TO GO' to get tickets for their IDOL??

That is not the bar's fault.....besides, it's THE CITY OF SCHENECTADY....not the city in Sesame Street(I still haven't found it yet)......

I still say they could have used other advertising tactics. If the place is doing so well, why the hyped up advertising? I thought the new and improved downtown was going to be 'family friendly'!

Well, here's one thing about this advertisment, whether it's got you to walk in the door or not, you're still talking about it, aren't you?  A little word of mouth advertising?
