ROTTERDAM
Police, court stand to gain needed space

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

Anticipated space needs for Rotterdam’s new public safety facility would more than triple the square footage now used by the Police Department and Town Court, according to a recent evaluation.
The study proposes allocating 28,000 square feet for the Rotterdam Police alone, which is more than double the space now shared by the court and police. The court would be allotted about 11,000 square feet, which is equivalent to the size of the entire building off Princetown Road.
In total, the study calls for 39,000 square feet plus 177 parking spaces. The study includes a training room, a crime lab, gym, six interview rooms, a 250-seat court gallery and holding cells for up to 15 prisoners.
Clough Harbor Associates was hired last spring to review the space needed for the new public safety facility and then develop a functional design for the building. The $35,900 contract with the fi rm was partially funded by a $25,000 state grant the town received last year.
Town officials were unsure how much the new facility would cost. Last month, town officials discussed acquiring property for the project from the Galesi Group, which has offered land off North Westcott Road near the Rotterdam branch of the Schenectady County Public Library.
“It’s a nice site and would provide us access to the five corners area,” Supervisor Steve Tommasone said Wednesday. “But we’re still looking at some other areas.”
The size of the public safety facility anticipates growth in both the 44-member department and the case load for the court. Deputy Police Chief William Manikas said both the police and town court have already outgrown their present facility, an old school building on Princetown Road.
The age of the building became an issue in July when heavy rain caused hundreds of leaks in the department’s roof and inundated the building. Though much of the department’s sensitive equipment was spared, the repairs to fix the roof cost in excess of $35,000.
Tommasone said Clough Harbor is expected to return a design for the public safety facility sometime before the new year. He anticipates a groundbreaking for the new building sometime in 2009 or 2010.
“We’re going to do this once,” he said “We want to do this right.”
