I was a bit surprised, as France is such a liberal country. I thought it was a live and let live country and it really didn't matter who was doing the living.

It used to be.  They used to be the most liberal place...until we turned liberal...now, they're turning conservative and THEY'RE worrying about their illegal immigration issues.

NumbersUSA reports that we now have 21 solid No votes on the Durbin Dream Act Amnesty, but we need 41 to defeat it and prevent cloture.

Durbin has modified his amendment to try and sell it by pulling the language out about in-state tuition.

This amendment would still grant "Amnesty for millions of adult illegal aliens."

Immigration crackdown hurting farmers

   ALBION — A flurry of immigration raids has some farmers in upstate New York worried about their ability to harvest all of their fruits and vegetables.
   The farmers blame a growing immigrant farm labor shortage on a dramatic rise in immigration enforcement at a time when national security restrictions have already sharply curtailed attempts by foreign workers to gain lawful seasonal employment in the United States.
   “It’s the worst year for immigration that we’ve ever had,” said Robin Root, whose family farm lost 17 of the 60 seasonal workers it takes on during its peak harvest from July through September.
   The mostly Mexican workers, hired to pick cucumbers, cabbage and pumpkins, were found to have false papers in two raids in May and August by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Root said in Monday’s Daily News of Batavia.
   More than half of all farm workers in the country are illegal immigrants, according to U.S. Department of Labor statistics. Last year, amid heightened immigration enforcement, California’s seasonal migration was marked by spot worker shortages, and some fruit was left to rot in the fields.
   Western New York has a reputation in farmworker circles as being aggressive in enforcing immigration laws, said Dale Stein, president of the Genesee County Farm Bureau.
   Stein visited Washington, D.C., last week with seven other agricultural officials from western New York to push for a bill for agricultural workers. He’s hoping Congress will support a plan to allow 1.5 million guest workers to work on American farms.
   While many core groups of farmworkers have returned to the region this year, farms haven’t had much luck convincing newcomers to come for about two months or so during the peak season, he said.
   “They don’t want to come here — it’s too risky,” he said.
Many farmers just want to get
through the season without scrambling to fill a void from lost help. “We’re on pins and needles,” said
Peter Gregg, spokesman for New York Farm Bureau. “The harvest could be disrupted at any time. It’s

Immigration debate roils anew

As the Senate prepares to vote on an immigration measure this week, senators are being forced back into politically treacherous territory on the controversial question of amnesty. In many ways, the debate is a mini-version of the free-for-all that consumed the doomed comprehensive bill in June.

Legalization opponents and supporters are picking up where they left off earlier this year, flooding congressional offices and Internet blogs with talking points on the latest legislation.

Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) has been trying for years to stitch together a bipartisan coalition for a narrower measure that he calls the DREAM Act. It would give illegal immigrants who were brought to the country at 15 years old or younger — and have remained here for at least five years — a path to citizenship if they go to college or enter the military.

“The fundamental premise,” Durbin said on the floor last week, “is that we shouldn’t punish children for the mistakes their parents made. That isn’t the American way. The DREAM Act says to these students: America is going to give you a chance. It won’t be easy, but you can earn your way into legal status.”

Durbin is offering the measure as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill, in part because it could ease strains on military recruiting.

An opponent of the most recent comprehensive bill, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), signed on as a co-sponsor last week, joining Sen. private Lugar (R-Ind.), Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and a dozen Democrats.

But with anti-immigration groups calling the amendment “amnesty on the installment plan,” passage is far from assured in a chamber that operates on a 60-vote threshold.

NumbersUSA, the group that helped derail the comprehensive bill that would have offered legal status to the existing 12 million illegal immigrants, posted on its website a tally of its “anti-amnesty champions.” So far, 21 senators have signaled to NumbersUSA that they will oppose the amendment. The group is looking for 20 more senators to block it.

“If you were to pass another amnesty, you would only encourage more illegal behavior because it is seen as a reward,” said Caroline Espinosa, a spokeswoman for NumbersUSA, which claims credit for more than 260,000 faxes sent by its supporters to Congress in the past week.

Proponents of the measure dispute the amnesty argument, saying it applies only to illegal immigrants who have been in the country for five years at the time of the bill’s enactment.

The Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan organization, estimates that 360,000 undocumented students would become immediately eligible for conditional legal status. An additional 65,000 could be added to the pool annually, the group found.

Like previous battles, advocates on both sides of the issue have been pressing Congress, blasting e-mails to supporters and asking them to contact senators. The office of Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), one of the members being targeted by both sides, reported a spike in calls starting last Monday.

The Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform attempted to counter its opponents, pleading with members in an e-mail last Tuesday: “We need your calls beginning NOW, before senators get the idea (again) that they only hear from anti-immigrant constituents, and that they should play it safe and vote against the amendment.”

Friends of ALIPAC,

We are pleased to announce that we have just confirmed with Senator private Durbin's DC office that he is withdrawing his attempt to attach the Dream Act Amnesty to the defense spending bill!

This is indeed a victory for our movement! So many of you have been calling, e-mailing, and faxing DC, while carrying the warning to America via talk radio shows and the Internet!

We salute you and pause to honor your sacrifices and this victory.

Even our opposition is acknowledging that the Senate offices were deluged with calls against the Dream Act that dwarfed supportive calls 50 to 1!

They are laying the blame for the failure of the Dream Act on Republicans and Internet groups like ALIPAC and NumbersUSA and we thank them for giving us credit where credit is due. The true credit goes to those of you who worked so hard on this. ALIPAC and many other fine groups are just helping to facilitate your efforts.

The bad news is that Senator Harry Reid has sworn that the Senate will consider and try to pass the Dream Act again this year, before they leave DC in November!

In traditional villain style, he is saying, "Curses, foiled again! I'll get you yet!"

We must remain vigilant and prepare for the next battle.

But today, we celebrate our hard earned victory.

Illegal immigrants living in states and cities that have adopted strict immigration policies are packing up and moving back to their home countries or to neighboring states.
  
The exodus has been fueled by a wave of laws targeting illegal immigrants in Oklahoma, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and elsewhere. Many were passed after congressional efforts to overhaul the immigration system collapsed in June.
  
Immigrants say the laws have raised fears of workplace raids and deportation.
  
"People now are really frightened and scared because they don't know what's going to happen," says Juliana Stout, an editor at the newspaper El Nacional de Oklahoma. "They're selling houses. They're leaving the country."
  
Supporters of the laws cheer the departure of illegal immigrants and say the laws are working as intended.
  
Oklahoma state Rep. Randy Terrill, Republican author of his state's law, says the flight proves it is working. "That was the intended purpose," he says. "It would be just fine with me if we exported all illegal aliens to the surrounding states."
  
Most provisions of an Oklahoma law take effect in November. Among other things, it cuts off benefits such as welfare and college financial aid.
  
There's no hard demographic data on the trend, partly because it's hard to track people who are in the USA illegally. But school officials, real estate agents and church leaders say the movement is unmistakable.
  
In Tulsa, schools have seen a drop in Hispanic enrollment.
  
About 60% of Kendall-Whittier Elementary School's 950 students are Hispanic, Principal Judy Feary says. Since an enrollment report Sept. 10, she says, 14 have left. Four more said last week that they would move.
  
Three weeks ago, one couple dropped their three children at school, then returned after lunch with their belongings packed in an SUV and trailer. Feary says they took the kids and said they were moving back to Mexico. "They were afraid and cited the immigration law," she says.
  
Marshall Elementary, where enrollment is 60% Hispanic, has lost about 10 students this year to the immigration law, Principal Kayla Robinson says. Most moved to Texas. "These are families that have been here for a long time," she says.
  
Illegal immigrants also are leaving Georgia, where a law requires companies on government contracts with at least 500 employees to check new hires against a federal database to make sure they are legally authorized to work.
  
Mario Reyes, senior minister at the Tabernacle of Atlanta, says his church lost about 10 families this summer. His daughter, a real estate agent, is helping them sell their homes.

  
Churches across the city report similar losses, says Antonio Mansogo, a board member of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders.

  
"There's tension because you don't know when immigration (agents) might show up, and a lot of people don't want to take those chances," he says.
  
Real estate agent Guadalupe Sosa in Avondale, Ariz., outside Phoenix, says migration from the state began about three months ago, shortly after Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, signed a law that will take effect in January. Employers who hire illegal immigrants can lose their business licenses.
  
Of the 10 homes Sosa has on the market, half belong to families that plan to leave because of immigration tensions.
  
"They know they might be losing everything today or tomorrow," she says.
  
Maria Sanchez, 35, joined the migration with her sister and nephew, who are in the country legally. Sanchez was in the USA illegally, but she has gotten a temporary work permit.
  
The three lived in Aurora, Colo., when Sanchez was fired from her job as district manager of a fast-food chain after she couldn't provide a valid Social Security number.
  
Colorado has approved several immigration measures. One gives employers 20 days to check and photocopy documents such as driver's licenses and Social Security cards, which new workers present to prove their legal status.
  
Because of the laws, Sanchez, her sister and nephew left five months ago. "I moved to Utah because they don't have the same laws here," she says.

State Sen. Dave Schultheis says he hasn't observed a major migration out of Colorado but has heard anecdotal reports that illegal immigrants are leaving. "It's absolutely a good thing," he says. "We want to make Colorado the least friendly state to people who are here illegally."
  
In Hazleton, Pa., families started moving away after the city passed an illegal-immigrant law last summer, says Rudy Espinal, head of the Hazleton Hispanic Business Association. The law would fine landlords who rented to illegal immigrants and suspend the business licenses of companies that hired them. A companion measure would require tenants to register with the city and pay $10 for a rental permit.
  
A federal judge ruled the measures unconstitutional in July, but that hasn't stopped people moving away, he says.
  
"People are still leaving," Espinal says. "Some people have told me that they're leaving because they don't want their kids to grow up in an environment like this."
  
Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta counters that some illegal immigrants who moved came back after the judge's decision, which the city is appealing. "I see a reversal," he says. "In a small city, it becomes obvious. ... Schools are overcrowded and there are five-hour waits in the emergency room."
  
He says, "We don't want to chase immigrants away, just the illegal aliens who are causing many of the problem we are having."

Honestly, I'd say deportation is fair.  It's an actual fact that by coming here, they have broken the law.  

Also, people have to get straight the meaning behind the 14th Amendment, which I think leads to confusion, and therefore, may need to be taken out of the Constitution until it is straightened out.

I'd say that illegal aliens (or undocumented workers, depending on which way you look at it), whether they are born in this country or not are not subject to the jurisdiction of this country.  By this thinking, this would automatically disqualify them from being born into citizenship.

Just watch, I bet that by 2048 (that's one of our next 10 Presidents, at most (figuring each only serving 1 term)), that we could actually have an illegal alien AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA unless we get this straightened out.

This, rightfully, could be called the Anchor Baby Amendment, as once this child is born in the US, and considered a legal resident and therefore a citizen of the US, you officially can't kick them out of the country.  And since they're only a baby, you can't kick out the parents either.  Then, there's other things which actually allow the extended family of these people to come to this country.  It's a broken situation that TOTALLY needs to be fixed, overhauled.
