So, would you be looking for residents from all over town or solely residents from Rotterdam Junction / Pattersonville for this?

If you call Peter Comenzo (town planner) at the Public Works Dept, he might know what the dates are
for those public input sessions.  I don't think they would be limiting who could attend.

I do know that one MAJOR hurdle to overcome is the limits on commercial construction within 4 zones
around the town's well heads --  interestingly .. for all the hoopla about the "Bonded Site" being on top
of the aquifer .. it is actually (according to the DEC) a  LESS sensitive area than the area along 5-S ..
about where the Knotty Pine Tavern is.
The hurdle to overcome is that the area right along 5-S for all intents and purposes .. would be almost
impossible to build ANY new business because of aquifer restrictions .. and I am not talking just say a
gas station .. but even something with little environmental impact like opening an gift shop in one of
the existing buildings.
The existing businesses - even the gas station and an auto repair place - are "grandfathered" in .. but
a less environmentally hazardous operation like a gift shop .. would be prohibited.  At least under the
current rules -- some state and some local.

SI has been there as long as I can remember.

what makes them sure developing their sensitive are would get a go-ahead.....really folks....you live there because you chose too....NYS sucks and your
taxes do too....so sever the animals head dont punch it in the stomach....

obviously those rules rules need to be addressed and hopefully changed. Many residents in that area have been granted permissions to build additions etc. The gas station you speak of is actually closed and is starting to collect junk...calls have been made but nothing happening. How did the educational center get approvals...3 tenths of a mile away from the Pine on the same side ?

The "cloverleaf" by Exit 26 is not part of the brownfield study area .. and the "sensitive" area closest to
the town's well heads is a few miles northwest on route 5-S.   It may be in another "sensitive" zone ..
but I don't know as I have only seen the maps for the area between Route 103 and SI.

I think permits to grant additions are one thing .. because it is an existing building and somehow the
use is "grandfathered" in.  Building a completely new house or new commercial/retail building in the
"most sensitive" area  (there are 4 levels of "sensitivity") would be next to impossible.

Someone said that the gas station still does auto repairs .. others have said it has been closed for less
than a year  ( I admit I don't which is accurate) .. part of being "grandfathered" in .. if a property has
been vacant for  1 year plus 1 day .. it loses the "grandfathered" status.   If it is vacant for less than
that time, a new owner could get a permit for the same use under the "grandfathered" status.

Aquifer Location

The Great Flats Aquifer is located in the Mohawk River Valley in Schenectady County, New York.  In total, the aquifer comprises approximately 25 square miles in Schenectady County.  The municipal boundaries for the City of Schenectady, Village of Scotia, and the Towns of Glenville, Niskayuna, and Rotterdam all rest atop the aquifer system making this a true intermunicipal resource.

True - but within the Great Flats Aquifer there are some areas that are designated as more sensitive
than others -- like the area closest to the municipal water well heads.
I am very concerned about development on the Great Flats Aquifer -- that is why the BOA Study is
important -- we need to decide what development  (if any) can be reasonably planned for in this area
given the environmental concerns.   The grant application was filed by the previous administration
and - since we obtained the study grant - the current administration is moving forward to go through
the study process.

I couldn't copy the map but the sensitive area extends from the Rotterdam town line along both sides of the river all the way over to the Rexford Bridge.

We may be referring to different maps and different areas.  I am referring to the area nearest to the town's
water wells in the junction -- and a map provided to the BOA study group.

I know that the Great Flats Aquifer covers a large area from Rotterdam Jct to Niskayuna.

Point being if one section of the aquifer becomes polluted it will spread to the area around the well heads sooner or later. There can't be just spot protection when you're talking about protecting the aquifer, ground water can travel for miles below ground and contaminate a very large area.
